“How was it?!”
Draco asked as they walked into the living room. The ride home had been long and exhausting and Lori had dozed off a
few times. Eventually she was grateful when they finally got home. She wanted nothing more than to soak in a long hot
bath and then go to bed.
She barely sat down before she started tugging at her heels. Gabriel knelt to help her remove them.
“It was awful.”
Lori answered honestly.
Draco glanced at the both of them. He looked like he didn’t believe them.
“What happened?!”
The two of them exchanged glances.
“Truly horrible.” She added.
Gabriel stood up and sighed.
“Sabine came.”
Just those two words were enough to make Draco freeze.
“No way.”
He muttered.
Lori nodded.
“Oh she did.”
“And you let her go?!”
Gabriel nodded.
“I had no choice but to. She’s allied with Kate’s father, there was at least a hundred people there… we couldn’t find a
proper way to corner her.”
“You could have called me.”
Draco sighed and Gabriel shook his head.
“Your main priority was Emilia. To watch over her and keep her safe, I couldn’t let you abandon one mission for the other.”
Lori massaged her feet with her hands, Emilia must be asleep already. She wasn’t planning on waking her, she herself was
too tired. But she wanted a bath.
“Any clue as to where she is?”
“I believe she should still be in town. With George backing her she’ll probably be moving around with a hell of security. Won’t be hard to miss…”
“Why would Caddel do that?”
Draco asked and Lori sighed.
“I think his daughter might have put him up to it. Kate told me she wanted to take revenge ever since I slapped her at
Gabriel’s funeral.”
Gabriel scoffed.
“Pathetic. She’s pathetic.”
“They attacked Lori. Tried to make her go on some sort of killing rampage. It didn’t work…”
“They wanted to turn the alphas against you?”
Gabriel nodded.
“Basically. Judging by how Sabine ran out of the Summit when Lori came back normalp, we must have thwarted her
plans.”
Draco nodded.
“Our only priority now is finding her. And Lori’s son. She can’t hide for too long.”
“She can’t. She must have grown tired of all this. Running from state to state… she’s bound to slip up.”
“Hopefully soon.”
Lori commented and Gabriel gave her a reassuring look.
After a short silence Gabriel stretched out his hand towards Lori and pulled her from the sofa.
“We’re tired. We’d like to go to bed.”
Draco nodded.
“Of course. I guess I’ll be on my way then… the guards will keep watch at the lobby.”
“Thank you for everything Draco.”
Gabriel’s voice was honest. Raw.
He truly meant it.
“Goodnight Draco.”
Lori called out and Draco nodded.
Gabriel saw Draco to the door while Lori went to check up on Emilia.
She was sleeping already. Grace has dressed her up in a bright yellow onesie with small ducks on it.
Lori placed a kiss on her forehead and watched her for a while. Gabriel walked in moments later, quietly, without his
shoes too.
After a while they both left.
In the confines of their room, Gabriel ran a bath while Lori peeled off the gown from her body. She was exhausted. In ever
sense of it. It didn’t even make sense how tired she was.
Tired and frustrated.
“Come.”
He beckoned to her and she walked into the bathroom. The water was deliciously warm and inviting and he had poured
him some bubble bath gel in it.
“Come soak in here for a while.”
He added and Lori nodded in agreement.
“What are we going to do about Sabine?”
She asked as she removed her towel.
He had seen her naked many times, she had no reason to be shy, but she was still a bit self conscious as she lowered
herself into the giant bathtub.
“Don’t talk about her right now…. I think we’ve had enough of that woman’s name hanging over us like a plague.”
Lori gulped hard.
“I agree…”
The water was warm and as she sat in it she felt instant relief washing over her bones. She sunk in lower, leaving only her
head in view.
“Whatever she injected in me… I think it’s all gone now…”
Gabriel sighed in relief as he sat at the edge of the tub watching her.
“That’s good… I was scared shitless.”
Lori chuckled.
“Me too… but somehow we managed it.”
“Together.”
He added.
“Yes. Together…”
Wordlessly, Gabriel picked picked up a washcloth and lifted one of Lori’s legs. He scrubbed gently, too gently.
Lori didn’t mind, she relaxed in the tub and let him do his thing. But even though her body was now at ease… her mind
was still restless.
What would happen now?
What next?!
Those were the questions in her mind. She knew it was unfair to ask since he would probably not have answers, but she
needed to know.
“Now… what next?”
Gabriel was silent for several seconds before he replied.
“We find her. Get Jack back… live happily ever after.”
Lori chuckled.
Happily ever after?
“Happily ever after… do you believe that?”
She asked and Gabriel nodded.
“I think a part of me does… but the other part… the rational part knows that would never happen. The world we’re in… it’s
not built for happily ever afters.”
“And then there’s still the whole Luna issue.”
Lori didn’t know why she brought that up, but it had also been on her mind. During the alpha’s summit many women had
introduced themselves as the Luna of the pack. Not just a mate, but a Luna. With their own authority.
Lori knew being a Luna was important and before the whole Elliot thing had happened it was clear the elders of the pack
didn’t want her as Luna.
“There’s no issue. You’re my Luna… we’ll proceed with the Luna rites regardless of what my grandfather or anybody else
has to say.”
********************
Siobhan wasn’t a very good witch. She was easily distracted. And forgetful. Though she had managed to keep Astra
subdued and drugged, the effects of the potion she had made wore off less than an hour later. Astra stayed mute and
soon the unsuspecting witch went back to other activities, one of which included flirting with the guard. The two of them
had disappeared later, leaving her alone in the room.
The dark objects dampened her powers, but as someone who had lived a fair share of her life as a human, she had
learned how to pick locks and now that her mind was much clearer, the lock on the heavy dark object that cuffed her
hands looked easy enough to pick.
She spent several trying to overturn her chair. The room had been left in a mess, the blood, the gore and the dismantled
furniture. Astra didn’t have time to mourn or feel guilty about the people she killed.
No. She had other things to do. One of which was running out of the godforsaken place she was in. She would locate the
nearest nephilim and send for help.
She knew at least one in New York, she hoped he was still in town.
After she finally overturned her chair, it took several trials before she could pick up the thin metal pieces that she had
shattered earlier in the fight.
They were from a stringy metal sculpture that was hung on the wall and she had intentionally destroyed it, knowing the
tiny metal pieces from the sculpture would be strewn all over the floor.
She had half expected Siobhan to clean it up, but clearly the witch thought too little of her and was overconfident in her
spells and potions.
They wore off faster than they were supposed to.
She thought picking the metal was the hard part, but picking the lock turned frustrating. She could barely see the lock in
the position she was in. She was tied to the chair, with her hands cuffed to her back. The chair, the lack of sight… it made
it all the more harder and strenuous to pick the lock.
She had almost given up countless times… half expecting Siobhan to walk in and catch her in the middle of escaping.
But she was surprised when the lock clicked open and she broke free.
Quickly, she worked on the locks on her feet, then untied the ropes that bound her to the chair.
With the dark objects gone, she felt her powers burst fully. Like the morning sun.
She pocketed the dark objects. Not caring for how their close proximity might threaten to dampen her powers again.
She was going to dispose of them. Without it they wouldn’t have been able to capture her, or do everything they had
done to her.
So far Siobhan only seemed to have two.
Good. She would throw it away.
She tiptoed to the only door and pressed her ear to it. She could hear no voices, but opening the door was a risk she wasn’t willing to take.
She would be weak for a few more minutes, she was in no position for a fight, with werewolves or even the witch.
She had to find another way.
She looked around and saw a window. It had been covered heavily with drapes, plunging the room into a dim darkness.
Astra drew the drapes, opening the window and finding that the apartment was at Keats thirty feet from the ground. She
could survive the jump, so that was not a problem.
The alley looked quiet too.
With one hand… she forced open the window and quickly elevated herself outside.
Astra took one last look at the room before jumping towards the cold hard concrete floor.
Her landing was perfect. But the pain rocked through her body, it took at least three full minutes for the pain to leave.
She was barefooted, somewhere along the line she must have lost her shoes. Or they took it off… she couldn’t tell.
She didn’t waste any time in running.
As fast as she could and as far away as she would.
There was one person she wanted to see before she disappeared forever.
She owed it to Lori. To at least try and save the nephilim child in Sabine’s grasp.
She had not seen him all the while she was captured, but the way Sabine had talked about him… it didn’t sound good.
Sabine was selfish and cruel… and from the little she had observed, she wasn’t only keeping the child to spite Lori.
Who knows what she could be doing to him?!
She could be using his blood to heal herself and her wolves, or even worse, performing experiments on him with the
witch Siobhan around.
It sickened her to even think about it.
And there was only one person who could do that.
Someone who was not Lori. Nor her werewolf alpha.
Someone who had experience with slipping in and out of places unnoticed. Someone who had hidden in shadows all her
life. Someone who had experience with running. Hiding too.
A superior nephilim.
Just one person in her mind.
Ione, Lori’s mother
