Chapter 72
Elliot had given everything he could. Said his piece, told them all he knew, yet it still wasn’t good enough for Gabriel to let him out of the cage he was in.
He wasn’t complaining. At least he wasn’t being tortured, or being starved. They had been treating him fairly well and he almost didn’t mind that he was in a
cage.
”
Gabriel believed that Lori was alive. Draco was still skeptical. The two of them were scouring the city, with Gabriel barking demands on the phone to Draco running helter skelter.
In the midst of all the drama Elliot wondered where his brother was, what he was doing and if he had the good sense to at least flee the country before Gabriel focused his full attention on him.
At least Gabriel’s attention wasn’t on him anymore, even though he didn’t know his fate, Elliot didn’t worry endlessly about it.
Whatever came to him, he probably deserved it. He wasn’t hoping for a death punishment, but if he was banished from the pack for treason, he could live with that. That was better.
A lead. There was a lead. Gabriel had left Elliot after questioning him to go for a run. He received an urgent phone call and decided to pick the call before he went on his run, which could take hours. Thank the gods that he did because the minute he picked up the call, he heard the first lead on Lori that he had
heard in months.
Gabriel had placed guards positioned at the penthouse building. Even after he left, just so that I’m case if Lori ever came back they would inform him and keep her there.
She had managed to come in and one of the guards had spotted her, but since she wasn’t going to the penthouse, he because quite unsure. But when she was leaving, he decided to follow her, just to confirm.
He never got a proper glimpse of her and when he did, he realized who she was and called him immediately.
The guards at the penthouse had pulled up the CCTV cameras and found out that the woman that was in the lobby was in fact Lori. They had cross checked with the pictures they had.
Gabriel recognized her immediately when they sent him a photo, even with the dark clothing and morbid look on her face.
Even though he knew her current location, he knew it was only a matter of time before she left there so Gabriel ran at break–necking speed to the spot.
He almost crashed his car. Twice.
But it was at least all worth it when he made it to the apartment in time.
Draco would arrive moments later with backup.
Draco had tried to warn him to stay back in case it was a trap but Gabriel couldn’t waste any more minute. He had not heard from her in days, he thought she was dead, there was no way he was passing up on a chance to see her when it was confirmed that she was at that location.
He knocked the door eagerly. And there seemed to be no reply.
He contemplated knocking down the door, staring at the hinges in impatience till the lock clicked and the door opened.
“Yes?”
A woman asked him and Gabriel looked behind her. He took a generous sniff of the air and his nostrils sharpened.
Yes. It was Lori.
She was indoors,
I’d like to see Lori.”
The woman raised her eyebrow. Gabriel could tell from her demeanor that she didn’t like him. Nor entertain him. Besides, she looked like she was about to lie, till a small figure came up behind her.
“It’s okay.”

Chapter 72
Lori told the woman softly.
Lori stepped from the shadows, stealing Gabriel’s breath and the heat from his skin. Suddenly all his anger and impatience crumble slowly like a falling sand castle. Before he could draw in the air his body he hugged her tightly.
Lori hugged him back. She could feel his firm torso and the heart that beat within. She could smell him, the same scent that had drove her crazy many times, how refreshing was it to smell him again.
Gabriel’s hands are folded around her back, drawing her in closer. Lori could feel her body shaking involuntarily, crying for the missed time they would never make back, crying to release the tension of those horrible days in the dark cold basement.
He pulled his head back and wiped her tears with a calloused finger, even the roughness of his finger brought more relief than her heart could hold.
He runs his eyes all over her, running his hand through her hair, as if he couldn’t quite believe she was not part of an almost forgotten dream.
When Lori tried to speak her voice faltered into unintelligible croaks, she wanted to tell him that she loved him but she didn’t think he’d believe it. At least not during that moment.
She wondered if he was somehow disappointed in her, for not searching him out, for not coming to him first. She wondered if he’d be able to understand why she did what she did. And how she was only just trying to protect him in her own little way.
She moved close enough to touch, his eyes were the same. Then his hand raised, silently
and he touched my hair. Lori wished she washed it. It had been greasy for days. Luckily she had clean clothes, but she still somehow felt inadequate.
“Lori…”
Gabriel called out slowly, his voice filled with depths and depths of emotions that Lori could strangely feel.
‘Gabriel.”
She croaked.
“You don’t know how happy I am to see you again… I thought I lost you forever..”
Lori shook her head, tears blurring her vision of him.
“You didn’t… I’m sorry..”
“I was losing my mind! Going crazy! Wondering where you’ve been!!”
Lori nodded, quickly wiping away her tears as she felt the silent tapping of Astra’s flip flop on the hardwood floor.
“We should go. We have so many things to talk about… we should leave.”
She said as she held his hands and he nodded.
She turned back to Astra who was still staring at them with a deep frown on her face.
“Give me your card.”
She whispered to Gabriel and he stared at her confused.
“Your business card.”
She added and Gabriel touched his pocket.
“I don’t think I have it on me..”
He murmured and Lori nodded.
“That’s okay.”
She turned back to Astra.

“This is my mate. The one I told you about..”
She said and Astra nodded.
‘I can see that.”
She muttered.
Lori sighed.
“I know I’ve caused you a lot of trouble. But if you ever need our help, we’re available to help you. We can help you out.”
Astra nodded.
Ill consider that.”
She said as she slammed the door on their faces.
Lori and Gabriel exchange a look before walking back to the car.
“We are fighting a losing battle Alpha.”
“How could you let him escape?!”
Sabine asked as she stared mindlessly outside. A few hours without her in control and things had already gone to shit. Lyle was gone and Sabine had no doubt in her mind that it had something to do with Vara and whatever the hell she was saying.
*I didn’t let him escape. I tried to stop him. My men tried to stop him! Unfortunately they’re not faster than a silver bullet.” It was true, Vara had a plan in motion, she just didn’t imagine or think that Lyle would have a weapon on him.
Sabine sighed.
“How did he get to them?! He must have taken them from here..”
She murmured and Vara nodded.
“He had access to a lot of places in here. I’m sure it was very easy for him to pick up a gun and some silver bullets.”
“Anyways. That’s not the point…”
“That is exactly the point!!
Sabine shrieked. Vara jumped back, a little bit startled.
“It is exactly the point that I am trying to make!! You let him escape!”
“How can you blame me of that Alpha?! I tried to stop him?”
“Obviously you didn’t try enough”
Sabine snapped bitterly
Vara bit her lips. Holding back her words.
She had been trying to talk sense into her alpha, but it seemed like the was fighting a losing battle.
“If… if my services no longer pleases you. I’d suggest you strip me of my title.”
Vara watched as Sabine’s shoulder went limp.
There was an uncountable silence. With only the sound of breeze coming through the open window to hear.
Chapter 72
Sabine slowly turned, then she cleared her throat.
Vara took another good look at her.
She had gone mad.
It was the only explanation for her recent behavior. Her attachment to that baby, it was clouding her senses, making her make foolish decisions..
They should be running, discussing their next line of action, gathering the rest of their pack and making plans to move to a safer location but no, Her dear alpha was more concerned about holding someone’s else’s child hostage and changing the child’s diapers.
She never knew if Sabine particularly wanted kids. The conversation never really came up, not since her ex husband.
But the way she treated the boy with such joy and glee made Vara wonder if Sabine had secretly wanted it.
Having a child. Being a mother.
Except it was the wrong timing and it was not her baby.
“So you’re leaving me?!”
Sabine asked and Vara shook her head.
“Left to me, I would stay. But lately, it seems that all I’ve been doing is disappointing you…”
“I will not resent you for it. If you would…”
“Stop being so phony. I would never do that to you. No matter how many mistakes you make.”
Vara smiled softly.
“Thank you.”
“Lyle might have escaped but he doesn’t pose much of a threat. He’s weak without us, without our power. He would never be able to take Gabriel down on
his one.”
Sabine didn’t believe that. There was a lot damage he could do. Especially if he started spilling some of her secrets.
“He already knows this place. He knows where we stay…”
Vara shrugged.
“Then, may I suggest we leave? Find some other place to lie low for a while as we plan and strategize.”
Sabine looked weary as she massaged her temples.
“And go where?!”
Sabine retorted and Vara shrugged. She had been thinking of it for a while.
“We need to leave the country. As soon as
possible.”
