Chapter 40 Actually, You Didn’t Have to Come in Person
When Hazel got home, she felt pretty crappy. Going to work after sobering up was a real struggle. Allegra could drink like a fish, but Hazel couldn’t stop puking oner she got back,
At the office, she made herself a strong cup of black coffee to try and shake off the hangover.
“Ms. Astor, the contract is ready, and Ms. Guise’s agent called to say they can sign it anytime, Xander said, all respectful.
Hazel took a deep breath to steady herself. Her head was killing her, but she still stood up and brushed off some imaginary lint from her clothes. “Let’s do it
now
Yesterday, she and Allegra had really hit it off, but because of George, she felt uneasy about how smoothly this endorsement was going
So, she needed to get that contract signed to be sure.
“Keep everything under wraps until the official announcement, Hazel told Xander.
Allegra had told her agent the same thing.
“Got it,” Xander.nodded quickly.
Seeing how respectful he was, Hazel felt a twinge of emotion, knowing the whole company was under Aiden’s thunb.
They always made things tough for her, making her job feel like a straitjacket.
Feeling lousy today, Hazel decided to leave work early. Once she got home, she ordered some takeout, took a shower, and flopped onto her bed.
But she couldn’t sleep, tossing
and
Turning. feeling like something was off. She glanced at her phone and realized she hadn’t heard from George all day
thought, Georges patience for chasing women is really weak. It hasn’t even started, and it’s already oven
Whatever, it was probably better if they didn’t bother each other.
Hazel put down her phone and tried to sleep. She slept like a log, but it felt like she was woken up by a doorbell in her dream. She turned over with a frown and looked out the window; it was still dark outside.
She wondered,
Is this a dream of real? What time is it?
Hazel groggily reached for her phone, and it was only 3:30 AM
She thought she was dreaming, but then she heard the doorbell again, clear as day. Someone was knocking at the door in the middle of the night.
Hazel sat up cautiously and slowly moved towards the door. Through the peephole, she saw George standing outside, and her calm heart inexplicably
fluttered
Didn’t he
he say he was going on a business trip for a week? Why was he back in four days?
More importantly, he hadn’t sent any messages all day. So she thought he just gave up.
Even though she didnt know Grong well, she could tell he was different.
After
hesitating for a moment, Hazel opened the door.
George face was flushed, and he reeked of alcohol, but he stood straight as a board,
He was the kind of guy who wouldn’t lose his cool no gutter what,
“Did you come to the wrong place? Hazel asked, puzzled.
“I’m here for you,” George said firmly.
He slightly raised the corners of his mouth, his eyes a bit hazy.
“It’s late, and I’m going to sleep,” Hazel said.
“Sorry to disturb you.” Georges apology felt half hearted, like he was just saying in to say it.
Chapter 40 Actualy You Didn’t Have to Come In Person
“Why are you here so late? Hazel asked.
“I just wanted to let you know I’m back, George replied
“Okay, now I know,” Hazel said, not really wanting to engage, but seeing how tired he looked, she added. “You could’ve just called. No need to show up in the middle of the night.”
“I thought your phone was broken,” George said, a bit sarcastically, hinting that she hadn’t been replying to his messages lately.
“I’ve been busy,” Hazel made an excuse, surprised at how petty he was being
“Really?” George clearly didn’t buy it.
“It’s really not a good time. You should go back, Hazel said, not wanting to argue and directly asked him to leave.
George had something to say, but the words got stuck in his throat,
“Drive safe.” Hazel said, closing the door
George wasn’t mad, just slightly frowned, feeling like Hazel was deliberately avoiding him.
But thinking back, he hadn’t done anything wrong, and he even felt like she had been warming up to
What went wrong that made the distance between them grow again?
As the car slowly left Hazel’s neighborhood, George called Ronan “Where are you?”
Ronan asked urgently, “Mr. York, didn’t you go to see Ms. Astor?”
“Turn around immediately.” George ordered.
to him before..
“Yes,” Ronan quickly told the driver to turn around. He realized that George had been kicked out by Hazel.
Hazel was really something else. While other women would be cager for George’s attention, she had actually shut him out.
Ronan quickly returned to George and respectfully opened the car door
George then glanced at him.
Ronan shivered inside.
The sudden silence was the scariest
“Give me the phone and wallet. George extended his hand, and Ronan nervously handed over his phone and wallet.
- “Let’s go!” George commanded.
In the following days, Hazel threw herself into the new product launch, personally overseeing every detail because the entire company was filled with Aidens old subordinates, who even messed up the product launch date.
“How did this happen? Hazel asked coldly in the conference room, looking at Caspian Day, the producting manager and one of Aiden’s trusted aides.
Ms. Astor, it’s not that we can’t keep up with production, but the workers are umelling. They think the pay is too low, and there’s nothing I can do,” Caspian said helplessly.
“Why are they only
only now saying they re unhappy with the pay? Why didn’t this happen earlier? Why are they picking this critical time to go on strike?” Harel
“Mr. Astor, you re busy every day, so you can’t attend to every worker’s needs. I can’t report every trivial thing to you,” Caspian said, sounding justified.
“So you have the ability to perfectly resolve the workers strike?” Hazel asked.
“If I could, I would certainly try my best, but you know many things don’t go as planned,” Caspian replies.
“If this batch of goods can’t be delivered on time, I’ll hold you fully responsible for all the losses,” Hazel said, her tone strict and commanding. “You better think carefully about whether you can bear such a big responsibility,” she added.
