Chapter 5
Jace stared at Zara coldly, his gaze sharp like knives. “Are you saying that even though Willow was willing to risk her life and nearly burned herself alive, she was still just putting on an act, playing the victim?“>
Although it was a question, his tone was utterly confident. Under Jace’s chilling gaze, Zara’s face paled. She awkwardly shook her head and said, “Jace, I … I didn’t mean that.“}
“Since you didn’t mean that, then don’t say such suspicious things here.” Jace coldly finished his sentence, then turned his head. His expression softened as he reached out to hug me. “Willow, let’s go, okay? Your injuries are serious; you need to go to the hospital.“}
But I forcefully pulled away from him, ignoring the pain of my dislocated joint. I hugged the calf to myself and stumbled out: “Good boy, Mommy’s taking you to the doctor.”
Under Jace’s distressed and sorrowful gaze, I suddenly stopped and looked at the big yellow cow. “Hubby, you come too. Lest you stay here and be harmed by some malicious people.“}
Helpless, Jace could only ask someone to lead the big yellow cow and come with me to the hospital. The doctor wanted to treat my wounds, but I anxiously shook my head and pointed at the calf. “Doctor, I’m an adult, I’ll be fine. My child’s burns are more severe; please treat him first.”
I pressed my hands together, my voice trembling with urgency. “She’s just a baby. She’s scared and she’s in pain. Please, I’m begging you, help my child first!“}
The doctor stood there in shock, glancing between me and Jace like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Jace’s eyes turned red as he pressed his lips together and said hoarsely, “Please, doctor. Treat the child first.“}
Only after the calf’s injuries were taken care of did I quietly sit down and let the doctor treat me. While I focused all my attention on the calf, softly speaking to comfort him and make him feel safe, the doctor suddenly frowned and said, “Mr. Shepard, does your wife not feel pain?”
Jace’s whole body jolted when he heard that. “No pain? That’s impossible!” Jace’s brow furrowed deeply. “My wife has delicate skin; even sitting on a single bean would make her uncomfortable. How could she not feel pain?“}
The doctor was equally bewildered, his expression gradually turning serious. “That’s strange then. Look at how severe her burns are; even the flesh is badly damaged. Logically speaking, the intense pain when applying medicine would be unbearable even for adult men like us, yet your wife’s expression hasn’t changed at all. If she wasn’t born without the ability to feel pain, then nothing else makes sense!“} A look of surprise and pain flashed across Jace’s eyes. Under the doctor’s questioning gaze, he forcefully suppressed the tears welling up within him. “Doctor, please give my wife a comprehensive physical examination. I must find out today what exactly has happened to her.” After more than two hours of physical examinations, the doctor walked into the ward with a grave expression, holding the various test results. Jace stood up immediately, anxious. “What is it, Doctor? Is my wife’s condition terrible?”
“No,” the doctor shook his head solemnly. “The test results show that apart from today’s burns, your wife’s physical condition is completely normal and there are no other injuries.”}
Hearing this, Jace’s eyes filled with astonishment. “Then how could she?“>
Zara quickly stepped forward, her face tear–streaked and pitiful. “Jace, I warned you that love can cloud your judgment, but you wouldn’t listen. You even thought I was trying to hurt Willow on purpose. You must know that you were the ones who helped me the most when I was having difficulty. I only feel gratitude towards you. I hope you two can live happily ever after, your love lasting a lifetime.“}]
