Chapter 5
The heavy door of the study thudded shut behind me.
It was just me and Old Alpha Godfrey now.
The quiet in the room felt heavier than the silence I’d carried in my chest for the past three years. I watched him settle into the leather chair behind the desk.
All the people thought I married Lawrence for love, that I clung to the Adkins name for status like some desperate social climber. Even Kayla and Lawrence believed that. But neither of them had a clue.
The truth was, I never had a choice.
It had been a deal–a blood–bound promise sealed years ago. Godfrey had saved my mother’s life using the pack’s resources, and in return, he demanded my loyalty. Not to him. To his son. He wanted me to marry
Lawrence, care for him, serve as his Luna, and above all, never be the one to ask for a
divorce.
I was eighteen when he told me the terms.
From day one, the marriage belonged to Lawrence. All I could do was exist quietly inside of it.
Ironically, it was Lawrence who broke that chain. He handed me the key to my freedom the moment he filed for divorce.
I stood there across from Godfrey, no longer the girl who once begged him for mercy. No. longer the obedient daughter–in–law. Just… Sophia.
When I addressed him with a cold, even, “Alpha Godfrey,” I saw it register in his eyes. He finally understood.
I was done.

“Sophia,” he said, his voice a little softer than I expected. “You and Lawrence have been together for three years. We’ve all seen your kindness, your devotion. He’s just… confused. Years ago, he loved Miranda, but she left him. This isn’t love–it’s unfinished business. Give him time, he’ll see the truth-”
I cut him off, my voice calm, polite. Distant.
“Alpha Godfrey,” I said, “Lawrence’s devotion to Miranda has lasted for years. Now that she’s finally returned those feelings, isn’t that a happy ending? Like Luna Kayla said–they were always meant to be. I won’t stand in their way.”
I placed two things on the desk in front of him–a sealed resignation letter and a black card.
“We’re officially divorced. I’m resigning from my role at the Silver Claw Packhouse. And this card-” I nodded toward it, “-holds every cent you once used to save my mother’s life.

No matter what’s happened since, I’ll never forget that kindness.”
He stared at the card. Then at the letter. His expression darkened.
“You don’t have to push us away completely” he said after a long pause. “And… what about the pup-”
His eyes flicked to my abdomen, instinctive.
I gave him a bitter smile.
“You don’t need to worry,” I said. “I won’t use the pup to tie myself to Lawrence. I’ve already terminated the pregnancy.”
His head snapped up, stunned.
But I didn’t waver. I’d worn this mask before -when I begged him to spare my mother. When I stood still while my world crumbled around me. This was nothing new.

After a long, heavy silence, Godfrey exhaled, voice gravelly. “He’ll regret this.”
I didn’t answer. Whether Lawrence regretted it or not… wasn’t my problem anymore.
I turned and walked out of that house without looking back.
The ache in my lower abdomen had grown worse since Kayla shoved me. It wasn’t just a cramp now–it was warm, terrifying. A rush of blood that hadn’t stopped.
By the time I reached my car, I was sweating. My hands shook as I clutched the steering wheel, every breath sharp and shallow.
I didn’t get far.
My vision started to blur just minutes from the estate. A fresh wave of pain hit, and I was forced to pull over before I passed out behind the wheel.

I looked down.

Blood had soaked through my dress. It pooled around my thighs, warm and endless.
Panic fluttered in my chest. I reached for my phone, hands trembling.
The first contact on the screen: Alpha
Lawrence.
He was still the closest. Still the fastest option. And right now, I didn’t have the luxury of pride.
I hit Call.
“…Lawrence,” I whispered when he picked up. “I don’t feel well. Can you… can you take me to the hospital? I’m just outside the estate. My car’s parked near the entrance.”
There was a pause.
Then I heard it–concern tightening his voice. “I’m coming right now-”
Miranda.
“Lawrence… my stomach hurts,” she whimpered. “Maybe it was all the crying… I think something’s wrong with the pup.”
And then Kayla.
“What are you waiting for? Get Miranda to the hospital, now!”
I heard every word.
Then Lawrence came back on the line.
“Sophia, I’ll take Miranda in first, then come back for you. Just… hold on.””
Click.
He hung up.
I leaned back in my seat, blinking through the buzz of the ended call. A bitter smile crept onto my lips.

Wait?
I wasn’t sure I could.

The bleeding hadn’t slowed. If anything, it was worse. The air inside the car felt thick, every breath a struggle.
I tried to call emergency services, but my fingers wouldn’t stop shaking. I couldn’t focus–couldn’t think.
Then a knock on the window made me jump.
My heart stuttered.
“Lawrence?” I murmured, turning my head.
But it wasn’t him.
It was Alpha Francis.
Tall, cold, dressed in black.
He frowned when I called him the wrong Niname. Knocked again, harder this time.
“Why the hell are you parked out here? Car trouble?”
My eyes widened. He lived in the same estate complex.
I struggled to roll the window down. My voice came out cracked. “Alpha Francis, I…”
He paused, squinting.
“Are you crying? I didn’t mean to yell–wait, are you-”
Then he saw the blood.
His jaw tightened instantly.
The copper scent hit him like a wave, and without another word, he yanked the door open, unbuckled me, and lifted me like I weighed nothing at all.
Everything around me was spinning, but I still felt the warmth of his chest, the steady

beat of his heart, and his voice–low, steady, calm.
“Don’t be scared.”
He carried me to his car and snapped at the driver.
“To the hospital. Now.”
Tires screamed as we sped away.
Not long after, another car drove past the same road.
Lawrence.
He saw my car pulled over, abandoned.
And just ahead…
He saw Alpha Francis.
Carrying a woman in his arms.
