That night, Alpha Franklin didn’t come back.

I sat in the bedroom of the packhouse suite -once our suite–surrounded by a sad little graveyard of memories. Photos. Gifts. The tie he left behind after that one full moon party. Even one of his buttons–I’d saved it.

Every item went into a cardboard box.

and my sharp nose, running around the packhouse on stubby legs, giggling, chewing on bones too big for her.

But that pup–the one I carried for three months–was personally aborted by Alpha Franklin.

The tears came fast, sharp and hot, and I let them fall.

I said calmly, “Yes. I’m getting married. Don’t really have time for Gamma duties right

For once, he didn’t argue. Probably thought I meant his ridiculous proposal. I could hear the smile in his voice.

His tone warmed. “I’m sorry. I’ve got a project out of town. A big one. I won’t be able to help with the wedding preparations.”

Before I could respond, Claire’s sickly–sweet voice piped up in the background. “Franklin, feed me!”

My stomach turned.

“I’m on the phone,” Alpha Franklin snapped at her, but his voice softened almost immediately.

She giggled. “Feed me, or I’ll find someone who will… Mmm…”

And just like that, the line went dead.

I should’ve thrown my phone out the window, but instead, I opened INS.

Claire’s latest post was front and center. Alpha Franklin feeding her fruit. The caption. read, “It feels so good to be loved. ”

It was full of provocation.

Beta Zack’s flustered voice came from the receiver. “Sirena! Franklin was stabbed more than a dozen times while trying to save Claire. Now he’s losing too much blood, and

I shuffled out of bed, and headed toward his room. But as I reached the door, voices stopped me cold.

“Franklin,” Beta Zack’s voice came through loud and clear, full of exasperation. “You nearly died saving Claire, and she left you- again! If Sirena hadn’t donated blood, you’d be dead! Why can’t you see who really cares about you? Treat her better for once!”

For a moment, silence hung heavy in the air.

Then Alpha Franklin’s voice, low and calm, cut through it. “Claire just had a kidney transplant. She’s not in good health. It’s understandable that she couldn’t donate

blood…”
