Chapter 6
The rogue flicked a glance my way–sharp, calculating.
Taking the opportunity, Alpha Franklin continued, “Go ahead and keep Claire if your want,” he said coolly, brushing rain from his jacket. “Sirena and I are going to look at wedding dresses tomorrow. We don’t have time to waste on you.”
His hand reached for mine, voice dipped in honey. “Sirena, let’s go.”
I froze. The chill that crept up my spine wasn’t from the rain–soaked air–it was from the realization that Alpha Franklin was using me as bait. A shield. A pawn to keep Claire safe.

It all clicked when the rogue’s focus shifted. His grip on Claire loosened, and he shoved her aside. “So, you’re the one he loves most?” His eyes gleamed with a twisted. excitement as he shifted and lunged at me.
I barely had time to scream before those claws fisted in my hair and yanked me back toward the edge of the bridge. The pain was blinding. My wolf stirred inside me, weak and furious, but too battered to fight back.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Alpha Franklin move.
But not toward me.
He ran to Claire.
“Claire–are you okay?”
That’s when I knew. I was just nothing.

And then–I was falling.
The rogue shoved me off, and the world tilted. Wind howled in my ears. Cold river water rushed up like a freight train.
The impact knocked the breath. Darkness clawed at the edges of my vision as I sank. I could barely hear anything over the roaring water, but one voice cut through like a blade:
“Save the rogue first. Don’t let him get away. He can’t hurt Claire again.”
I wanted to laugh, but the river water filled my lungs, and the pain made my vision go dark.
Before completely losing consciousness, I finally understood.

In Alpha Franklin’s heart, my life was not even worth that of a kidnapper!
When I came to, I was in a hospital bed, IV in my arm and an ache that went bone–deep.
The doctor was speaking, but his words. blurred.
“Miss Sirena, your body has been severely depleted these past few years. Long–term drinking, mental exhaustion, plus the old injuries from drug testing. This fall from the bridge has also damaged your foundation. You must take good care of yourself in the future, otherwise…”
Alpha Franklin appeared at my bedside, looking pale and drawn. Like he hadn’t slept. Like he was the victim.
“Sirena,” he said, voice soft. “You’re awake.

Are you hurting anywhere?”
I looked at him, my eyes calm.
If he was really worried about me, how could he have chosen to save the kidnapper without hesitation?
Seeing my silence, Alpha Franklin reached out to touch my face, but I turned my head to avoid my hand.
He paused, his voice deep. “This time it was my negligence. I’ll make it up to you.”
I twitched the corners of my mouth but didn’t speak.
Alpha Franklin, you owe me too much.
It can never be repaid.

Perhaps feeling guilty, this time Alpha Franklin stayed by my side in the hospital for a full two days. After I was discharged, he immediately took me to an auction, saying it was to compensate me.
I tried to decline several times but couldn’t, so I could only go along with him.
As soon as we arrived at the auction, we ran into an old acquaintance.
Claire Blake!
But this time, Alpha Franklin didn’t even glance her way. Instead, he stuck to my side, acting the perfect doting fiancé.
He poured me water, adjusted my shawl, even peeled crab for me.and from time to time, softly asking me if I was cold.

I knew better. This wasn’t about me. It was about him easing his own guilt.
Before the auction started, Alpha Franklin answered a phone call and left for a while.
I was standing alone by the champagne counter when a man walked over and asked me for my contact information with a smile. “Miss, you’re very beautiful. Can we get to know each other?”
Before I could respond, a hand slipped around my waist, pulling me back against a firm chest.
“She’s my fiancée,” Alpha Franklin said, his voice cutting like ice.
The man stammered an apology and fled, leaving me staring up at Alpha Franklin’s stormy expression.

“Why didn’t you reject him?” he demanded, his tone accusatory.
I said indifferently. “We’re not married yet, are we?”
Alpha Franklin stroked my face, his tone filled with an undeniable possessiveness. “We’ll get married sooner or later.”
“Other than marrying me, who else do you want to marry?”
He stared into my eyes and said word by word, “Anyway, in this life, I will marry no one but you!”
I looked at him and suddenly laughed.
How ironic.
