Chapter 5 Breaking Point
Nevea
I immediately went to make tea and sat on the couch. I felt lightheaded and hoped. that the morning light would do some magic. After a few sips, I felt better. Then, I grabbed my phone and checked some emails. I was typing a response to one email when the Fireblood Pack group chat kept buzzing with new messages. Last night, I promised to stop checking the group, but my fingers seemed to have their own mind.
It was Claire. Of course, it was. She had sent some pictures once again, hoping to gain attention. My heart sank as my eyes landed on the latest photo – Kai’s car parked outside Claire‘ s house. Claire captioned it with, “Always safe with my Alpha.” Simple words, but they hit like a punch in my gut. My grip on the phone tightened as I read the comments.

They make such a cute couple!
Moon Goddess should‘ ve paired them together!
I’ve never seen Kai so relaxed. They just fit; you know?
My chest constricted, my breath coming in short and shallow. Kai and I had been together for five years, but I felt like a stranger to our relationship. Everyone in the pack seemed to favor Claire, the sweet Omega who always had Kai‘ s attention. Nobody seemed to care that I was Kai’s
mate.
The phone vibrated again, causing my stomach to flip. This time, it was a selfie. Claire stood beside Kai, smiling with his arm draped casually over her shoulders. They looked intimate. The caption read: “After the party, my Alpha ensured I got home safe. How lucky am I?” The playful emojis that followed did nothing to soften. the blow.

My vision blurred as tears welled in my eyes. I quickly wiped them away, but the hollow feeling in my chest remained. It was always like this. Claire posted pictures, claiming little moments with Kai while I watched from the sidelines, helpless and hurting.
A knock on the door startled me. I immediately stood, brushed my hair away from my face, and walked to the door. When I opened it, I found a delivery man smiling and holding a small package.
“Delivery for Nevea,” he said, handing me the package.
I frowned.
“But I didn’t order anything.”
“It’s from Kai,” the man explained and left.
I stood in the doorway, staring at the small bag containing my favorite breakfast – warm croissants and fresh fruit. Kai always knew how to soothe me after an argument,

but today, it did nothing. I just dropped the bag on the kitchen counter.
Kai was probably with Claire, making sure she was comfortable and laughing just like in the pictures. I leaned against the counter, my mind racing with the
memories of all the times Kai had chosen Claire over her. At first, it was small things. – helping Claire with training or attending to her when she was hurt. But over time, Claire always gets in the way. Kai used to have a crush on Claire when they were in the tenth grade, and I felt like those feelings hadn’t died. And that was why Kai kept pushing me further and further away.
Another message came, and it was still a picture of Kai and Claire, but they were laughing while at the training grounds. Claire had captioned it, “Alpha Kai always knows how to make me smile.”
Frustration boiled in me, so I threw the phone onto the couch. It wasn‘ t fair. I had given everything to Kai – my heart, loyalty,

and life, but he still chose Claire. It was always Claire.
Suddenly, the door swung open, and Kai walked in. His brow furrowed, sensing I was not in a good mood today. His eyes landed on the untouched breakfast, and he sighed.
“We need to talk, he said with a low
voice.
I folded my arms across my chest as anger
rose.
“About what? Another photo of you and Claire? Or maybe how everyone in the pack thinks you two are a perfect match?”
Kai’s jaw tightened, but he kept his voice calm.
“Ivar and Claire are a little upset that you left the party early last night. Maybe we could invite them for dinner. To clear the
air.”
I stared in disbelief while my mind was

already cursing him.
“Invite them for dinner?” I repeated, my
voice started to rise.
“Are you serious right now? Kai, you barely spoke to me at the party because you were too busy peeling seafood for Claire. And I upset them? Now, I have to dine with them to appease them. Are you joking?”
Kai ran a hand through his hair, frustration clear in his eyes.
“Nevea, it’s not like that. I’m trying to fix things here.”
“Fix things?”
I shook my head, struggling to control my tears. He canceled our mating ceremony for Claire’s fake injury, and Kai didn’t make an effort to fix things. I left early last night for work, and here he was fixing things because she was upset. How considerate of him!

“Yeah, when others are upset, you find ways to fix things. Out of Alpha duty, right?”
Kai’s shoulders sagged as he exhaled.
“Nevea, I’m not asking you to be best friends with Claire. I could feel it hurt you that she got hurt, and I had to cancel the mating ceremony. But Ivar is my beta, and Claire is part of the pack. They were hurt by what happened. We can’t let people gossip about how inconsiderate we are.”
“And what about… never mind. I am going to prepare for work now,” my voice cracked in pain.
Kai’s eyes softened, and for a moment, I thought he might feel my pain. But he just took out his phone and checked some
messages.
“The restaurant is already reserved. You have to be there by exactly 6:00 PM. Don’t be late, please.”
Kai turned around and left me so pissed.

“Fine, whatever!” I muttered to myself, but deeply wounded.
