Chapter 12
In the end, Mara left the room, leaving me alone with Alpha Lucas.
I inhaled deeply, steadying myself, and said the words I had been holding back.
“I, Luna Emily Doyle, reject you, Alpha Lucas Swanson, as my mate.”
He was clearly caught off guard by my words.
“No,” he blurted, his voice trembling. “I don’t accept your rejection. I reject your rejection.”
Alpha Lucas’s face was a picture of panic as he grasped my hand. “I know I made a mistake this time, Emily. I was wrong.”

I stared at him with a blank expression, thinking about how recently this hand of his had held Omega Camille’s.
“Emily,” he pleaded, his voice softer, almost breaking. “I won’t do this again. Just wait another half month. Please!”
“Marriage requires mutual understanding. I shouldn’t have left you while you were pregnant to be with Camille, but I really had no choice.”
Alpha Lucas continued, as if reasoning with himself more than me.
“You know Camille doesn’t have much time left, but we can always have another puppy, can’t we? We’re still young; we have many years ahead of us.”
I felt my throat tighten, my chest burning

with frustration.
His words were a false apology.
He wasn’t acknowledging what had been faut.
Instead, he tried to paint over the cracks, excusing his betrayal as something necessary, even reasonable.
“Alpha Lucas,” I said, my voice steady though my hands trembled, “Omega Camille is dying, yes. But my puppy is already gone.
My puppy. Not our puppy. Alpha Lucas no longer deserved to claim that bond.
I had hoped for a happy family because my own was far from perfect, and I wanted to provide a happy home for my puppy. Looking at it now, it seems I have achieved nothing.

I began to feel a twisted sense of relief that this puppy never had the chance to be born.
“Do you really want to spend many more years with me?” I asked, meeting his gaze.
His response came immediately, almost frantic. “Of course!” He pulled my hand to his face as if the gesture could somehow bridge the chasm between us.
In the next moment, his phone rang.
“Lucas, where have you been?” Omega Camille’s voice chirped on the other end. “Did you get the bandages?”
I noticed the bandage packaging sticking out from Alpha Lucas’s jacket pocket. He had been buying bandages for Omega Camille’s cut hand before coming here.

Even though I was mentally prepared, the anger surged within me.
“Alpha Lucas, get out.”
I closed my eyes and repeated the words I had woken up saying.
