Chapter 9
In high school, despite having both parents, I felt as though I was an orphan. Everyone knew Emily had no one to turn for help. Consequently, I became an easy target for bullying.
Initially, the bullying was subtle–being isolated and having my books torn. When I pushed one of the tormentors in frustration, she reported me to the teacher. A parent meeting was called.
Of course, my parents didn’t show up.
I stood there, helpless, as the other parents berated me. Just when the shame threatened to swallow me whole, Alpha Lucas stepped forward.

“She’s not the one at fault here,” he said firmly.
I don’t remember the rest of the meeting, only that Alpha Lucas had defended me when no one else would.
The bullying escalated after that, Everyone was sure my parents didn’t care about me. One day, I was cornered in an alley and beaten. On another occasion, they tried to harass me outside school. Each time, it was Alpha Lucas who came to my rescue.
He caught one of the incidents on his phone and turned it over to the school. It led to the bullies being severely punished, something I hadn’t dared to dream of.
“Are you okay?” he asked that day as I sat on the ground, tattered clother, shaking. He crouched beside me, draping his coat over

my trembling shoulders. When the tears came, he didn’t say anything, just handed me a tissue.
Things got better after that. The bullying stopped, though the rumors lingered.
I began to watch Alpha Lucas from a distance. He was a gentle soul, kind to everyone. Like a soft breeze, he swept into my gloomy days and carried away the shadows, leaving streaks of sunshine in their place.
But back then, Alpha Lucas was already Omega Camille’s mate. They’d been together since their 18th birthday and were admired by everyone as the perfect match. I accepted that my story with him ended there.
It wasn’t until my sophomore year that I heard whispers from old classmates–Alpha

Lucas and Omega Camille had broken up.
Apparently, Beauty Omega Camille had caught the eye of the strongest Pack Red Moon Alpha, and she rejected Alpha Lucas in favor of him. The breakup was messy.
The news left me with a whirlwind of
emotions.
Then one evening, I saw Alpha Lucas at the café where I part time worked. He sat alone, looking utterly dejected, and my heart ached for him.
“Happiness is something you have to seize for yourself,” Mara had told me once.
So, I did.
I stayed by Alpha Lucas’s side, helping him heal from his heartbreak. Over time, he

smiled again. And when the Moon Goddess blessed me as his second mate, I believed my happiness had finally taken root.
But now, it feels like that happiness was fleeting.
Alpha Lucas was sent to fetch some water by Omega Camille. As he left, she turned to
- me.
“Luna Emily,” she said, her voice trembling with the frailty of her illness. “I know what I’m doing isn’t right, but my time is running out. I have to be selfish and keep Lucas for just one month.”
I didn’t reply, my gaze fixed on the pale, skeletal figure before me.
“It’s so painful being sick,” she continued. “But with Lucas here, the pain isn’t as

unbearable. He makes it… easier.”
Her lips curved into a faint smile, but her eyes betrayed her true emotions- possessiveness and triumph.
“In a month, I’ll give him back to you,” she added, though the words felt hollow.
She had once abandoned Alpha Lucas, and I had been the one to pick up the pieces. I had been the one to heal his broken heart and show him that love could bloom again.
Yet here she was, a terminal illness granting her the power to reclaim him.
As she sat there, frail and pitiful, I realized the bitter irony of it all. The woman who had discarded Alpha Lucas now had the strength to pull him away from me.
