Chapter 40
Ethan must have sensed my seriousness, because his teasing expression faded.
“Jiselle,” he said after a moment, his voice lower. “I didn’t want to assume before, but… after what happened with Max, I’ve started noticing things.”
I hesitated, looking at him warily. “What kind of things?”
Ethan ran a hand through his hair. “Every wolf in second to fourth year–all of them–they have the same wound on their palm.”
I stiffened. My fingers curled into my hoodie instinctively.
He noticed. His green eyes sharpened.
“You know about it, don’t you?” he asked.
Shit
I turned away quickly. “Ethan-”
“Don’t even think about lying to me, Jizzy,” he said sharply. “What the hell is going on? Did Max ever tell you?”
“No, he couldn’t. It would kill him, as I assumed you asked Nate and he told you the same. What he told me… I don’t know if I can tell you.”

Guilt gnawed at my chest. I hated lying to him. I felt awful for keeping the fact that I someone had abilities from my t But if I told him the truth–about my gift, about Max’s warnings–he’d be in just as much danger as I was. Ethan scoffed, shaking his head. “You’re hiding something.”
Before I could respond, the massive wooden doors of the library came into view. I exhaled slowly, relieved for the distraction.
“We’ll talk later,” I muttered, pushing open the door.
Ethan shot me a look but didn’t press further.
The library was eerily quiet at this hour, the faint scent of aged paper thick in the air. The walls stretched high with towering bookshelves, the dim glow of enchanted lanterns casting long shadows.
Ethan shoved his hands into his pockets. “Alright. Where do we start?”
“Anything ancient, I murmured, scanning the shelves. “Most likely in folklore.”
Ethan frowned. “Folklore?”
I nodded, running my fingers along the spines of books. “The best way to hide the truth is by turning it into a fairytale.”
He considered that before shrugging. “Alright, mystery girl. Lead the way.”
For the next two hours, we combed through old records, flipping through fragile pages filled with stories of ancient wolves, powerful rulers, and creatures that could shift the balance of nature itself.
Most of it was useless.

Ethan plopped down beside me, tossing a book onto the table. “This is a joke,”
I shot him a glare. “You wanted to come, remember?”

“Yeah, but I didn’t expect to be flipping through bedtime stories at three in the damn morning.”
I rolled my eyes but couldn’t argue. Maybe this was a mistake.

A book fell from the shelf behind me.
I jumped, my pulse spiking.
Ethan frowned, standing immediately. “What was that?”
I turned, scanning the shelves. Slowly, I reached for the fallen book, its th

A cold sensation curled through my veins,
This this was it. But as I skimmed through more pages, I realized that they were…. torn out.

A creak echoed from the library entrance.
Ethan tensed immediately.
I shoved the book into my hoodie. Shit.
The door groaned open slowly.
A shadow spilled into the dim light, a figure stepping inside.
My stomach dropped.
