“Oh, what is it?”

I smiled. “You’ll find out in a few days.”
Claire rolled her eyes, “So about the car… just
give it to me, too. My friend also gets a gift every month for her pregnancy.”
“You’re really jealous of your friend, huh? Your friend was cheating on her husband, and had another man’s baby. She divorced him after
getting caught. Are you planning on following her lead?”
“I…”
My mom’s expression changed when she heard that. She threw her slipper down at Claire. “How dare you?!”
My mom hated cheating more than anything else. My dad had done the same thing. She
caught him cheating and got divorced
immediately.

Claire was too shocked to say anything, and
just glared at me.
As we were eating, Claire saw the gold
necklace on Emily and was immediately
distracted. She asked Emily in shock:
“Emily, where did you get that? I’ve never seen
you wear it before!”
Claire’s question attracted everyone’s attention.
Emily blushed and glanced at my brother,
before saying, a little shyly, “A college friend gave it to me.”
“Why would a friend give you something like that?”
Claire looked confused, but then she saw Emily’s blushing face, and she understood.
She looked at Emily amused

“So, you’re getting married?
“Getting married is good, unlike some people
who are so proud of being single and are living
at their mom’s place, without contributing
anything!
“Who’s going to take care of you when you get old? Your nephews will have to look after you. And who knows if you’ll even leave your inheritance to them.”
Emily chimed in. “Who else would you give it to,
if not your nephew? Anyone with a brain would know to love your nephew!”
“Yeah, let’s eat!”
I didn’t say anything, but after dinner, I put the shopping receipt my brother had thrown away back into his pocket.
I got back into my bedroom, opened my phone

and saw Claire’s text.
【Sarah, I’m giving birth to the next generation of your family, and you’re just talking about getting me a gift. You haven’t given it to me yet. Are you lying to me?
【I don’t want anything else, just get me a gold necklace too!
【Oh, and a gold bracelet!
[If you don’t give me these, I’m gonna tell your
nephew that you were so selfish!
[You don’t want him to hate you, do you?】
A smirk spread across my lips.
I replied to Claire’s message.
【Claire, the gift I have for you, I’ll give it to you tomorrow. It’ll be worth more than any gold necklace or bracelet.】

The next morning, Claire knocked on my door
early.
“Where’s the gift? You said you’d give it to me today!”
“Hold your horses, let me get out of bed.”
I walked out of my bedroom and glanced at the house. My mom was up, she had her daily
morning routine of going out to exercise.
I yelled out, “Claire, let’s go, I’ll show you the gift I got for you!”
Then I left the house with Claire. I slammed the door extra loud, so everyone in the house could hear me.
As we were leaving the neighborhood, I checked the camera on my phone, and stopped in my

tracks. “Claire, I forgot something. I gotta go
back for it.”
Before Claire could react, I turned around and
started walking quickly.
