Chapter 24
*“In a fight, your doubt is a target of enemy’s attack.”*
*Toba Beta*
Is it possible to feel safe with someone while still being afraid of them?
I didn’t use to think so, but as I made my way into Blood Moon territory with one of Ambrose’s hands clasped in mine, I
realized I might need to change my mind on that one.
I mean, I’d just watched the guy take on five wolves single-handedly. He’d forced them to transform, suspended them in
mid-air, and broken their necks. And he’d done it without even touching.
There wasn’t a bone in my body that thought Ambrose would hurt me, but that didn’t mean my stomach didn’t roll into
knots when he took down three more Blood Moons without even trying. He cracked their necks with a flick of his wrist,
leaving nothing but their broken bodies lying on the ground.
And then he took down four more.
And another two.
We steamrolled through their border patrol without a problem and advanced farther into Blood Moon territory without
an issue. Ambrose sensed their warriors, breaking their necks with the swing of his fingers long before Luke or I had seen
them coming. Before the dead warriors could ever warn the rest of their pack that we were there.
We were unstoppable.
No, Ambrose was unstoppable.
Blood Moon lands were vast, and their pack was a sharp contrast to the struggling lands that my people lived off of. My
pack lived in tents and campers, the Blood Moons had large, brick houses and streetlights. I wondered how many of
those people were sleeping in their brick houses, completely unaware they were under attack.
As I looked on, I spotted another warrior dash toward us. Ambrose raised his hand to break his neck like the rest, but I
seized his wrist. “Wait,” I said, his intense gaze landing on me. He still had that blank expression on his face, and it took
everything in me not to cower under his stare. “We need to find our pack,” I continued, “Which means we need to leave
one of these guys alive long enough to tell us where they’re being kept.”
Beside me, Luke shook his head in agreement.
Ambrose gave me the slightest nod before turning back to the warrior. He bent his index and middle fingers in a ‘come’ motion, and suddenly, the warrior was splayed at our feet, his mouth open in a silent scream as his limbs bent in
unnatural positions. Ambrose had broken his arms and legs.
I actually gasped at the sight, stumbling back into Ambrose’s chest in surprise.
He caught me easily, and I felt one of his hands stroke my hair.

“It’s okay, little wolf,” he murmured, his lips nearly touching my ear. Despite all the excitement of the last hour, I had to
suppress the urge to purr. “Ask him what you want to know. He’ll tell you.”
I wasn’t quite sure the nameless warrior would be so agreeable as I stared down at him, his face contorted in silent
agony. “Where are you keeping your hostages?” I asked, my voice coming out stronger than I’d expected.
For a brief moment, I realized that this was the first time I’d ever spoken to a Blood Moon warrior. These people had
killed my parents, but this was the first time I’d ever really come face-to-face with one.
That thought made any sympathy I might’ve had for the warrior at my feet disappear. These people, these monsters,
didn’t deserve sympathy. They hadn’t had any when they’d demolished my pack or murdered my family.
All the warrior could do was twitch and spasm with his broken limbs, but suddenly, Ambrose flicked his wrist again. The
warrior started screaming.
The loud scream filled the forest and I whipped my head around, looking for signs of other warriors. If the rest of the
Blood Moons hadn’t known about our presence, they certainly did now.
“Shit,” Luke hissed, his face pale as he scanned the dark forest and large, brick houses. “That’s definitely going to alert
the rest of their warriors. So much for hiding our presence.”
My heart might as well have been beating a million miles an hour.
“I never had any intention to hide,” Ambrose replied flatly, and then he turned back to the screaming warrior, “Now, my mate asked you a question. *Where are you keeping your prisoners?*”
Something in Ambrose’s voice changed when he asked the last question – I could feel it. His voice was the same, and yet,
I felt something thick and heavy settle into the air. Almost suffocating. Goosebumps erupted on my arms, and from the
corner of my eye, I saw Luke tremble.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but I certainly didn’t expect the warrior’s screaming to stop. Suddenly, his face went
slack – void of any of the pain he’d just been experiencing – and his eyes turned foggy. His voice was like a robot as he
said, “We’ve been keeping them in the cells underneath the pack house.”
My jaw fell open.
*How the fuck did he do that? It’s like he compelled that guy to talk.*
Ambrose wasn’t done yet though. “Which of these houses is your pack house?”
There was no hesitation as the warrior answered in that same robotic voice. “Straight ahead, the biggest one. There’s a
back entrance that leads straight into the cells.”
And then Ambrose broke his neck with another flick of his fingers.
I was still processing what I’d just seen when Ambrose cupped my jaw with his fingers and tilted my face toward him. For
the first time since we’d entered Blood Moon territory, his eyes were soft. “Little wolf,” he said, “The others are coming
now. Take your friend and go find your pack members – I will handle the rest.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but he pressed his lips against my forehead and said, “Go.” Perhaps it was the finality in his
voice or the thought of finding my pack members, but I nodded.
If the last several minutes had taught me anything, it’s that Ambrose had no problem handling himself. So, I didn’t
hesitate to take off toward the direction of the Blood Moon pack house, Luke hot on my heels.
