Sidonia crawled onto the bed. “You look awful.”
“You tattled.” Zorah grunted and glared at her over the pillow she hugged to her chest.
“About what?”
“Ippocrate. Now they all want vengeance and they’re going to expose me to the entire community t to make my uncle
and mother pay.”
“They deserve to pay. When I told Vodingo how much they hurt you, he wanted blood for you, and I want him to get it. I
love you Zorah and your uncle and mother deserve to pay.”
“Easy for you to say. It’s not your abuse being plastered all over the parish and community. Everyone is going to know!”
“They already know. If anything, they too should be held accountable for the way they turned their eyes away. Keeping
their eyes averted meant they could do whatever they wanted because nobody was telling on one another. I hope Icaro
and Vodingo burn the entire place down.”
Zorah grimaced and sighed. “Well, now Icaro is out there telling his father about what happened and my choices in the matter are being withdrawn. This family is all kinds of insanity, and I don’t like it.”
“On Tuesday after your date you liked him.”
“Until I watched him shoot a woman, threaten men, jab me with a sedative, threaten my mother and uncle,” she sniffed.
“It’s all too much.”
“Have you spoken with your new mother-in-law yet?”
“No.” Something in Sidonia’s tone made her wrinkle her nose, “have you already?”
“Yes. Vodingo and I facetimed her last night before bed. She was lovely. She and your mother-in-law were setting up our
villas for our arrivals. She was showing me the room I’ll be sharing with Vodingo. I swear you could put our entire
apartment including both bedrooms into the bedroom she showed off.”
“Really?”
“She said she’s extremely excited to have a daughter to spoil. She was asking me my favorite foods and drinks and what
designers I like. I laughed at that. Imagine people actually have favorite designers instead of what is on sale at Target and Walmart.”
Zorah giggled, “she sounds very nice.”
“She really is.” Sidonia twisted her lips, “I know you’re upset, Zorah and scared and angry,” she took a breath, “but if ever
there were people who I was going to essentially be kidnapped and forced to wed at my best friend’s arranged marriage,
it was these people. I know the rest of the world doesn’t view the family as good or kind or whatever, but they’ve been
so good to me since Vodingo declared me his. Apart from you, nobody has ever been so kind to me. Not anyone.”
“Really?” Zorah couldn’t deny hearing her friend’s words made her happy for her. “How so?”
“Well, for starters, calling his mom. I merely mentioned I was nervous about meeting her when we arrived tonight
because I am not a worldly woman. He called her immediately. Didn’t even hesitate and it was only to make me feel
better. Then he poured me a glass of champagne and I asked him if he was having a drink, he told me no. I asked him
why and he said he waited thirty-five years for his wedding night with me and he wasn’t going to miss a moment of it
under the influence of anything. He wanted to feel it all.”
Zorah’s smile was genuine as her friend gushed, “it sounds very sweet.”
“It truly was.” She blushed, “and then when the time came for us to be together in bed, he was so patient with me. I only
met him yesterday and yet, he made me feel like we’ve known each other forever. I swear the first hour of our time
together was all about me. He didn’t even let me touch him, you know, down there. He wanted only to give me
pleasure.”
“Did it hurt?” Zorah asked nervously.
“Yes.” Sidonia nodded. “I won’t lie but he did everything in his power to make it hurt less. I could not have handpicked a
better person to spend my first time with. He held me in his arms after and told me all about where we will live and what
our lives would be like. I fell asleep curled up next to him. He woke me up being very amorous again and he was
exploring my body in the morning sunlight. He saw my scar and asked about it. He asked about all of them actually and
was sympathetic especially after he relayed the events of your wedding night. Every nick on my skin he questioned. He was very unhappy about my parents beating me.”
“It sounds like a perfect wedding night.”
“He’s going to give me a real wedding with all of the family there. He wants to wait though until I’m ready to say my
vows for him and not for you.”
Zorah frowned at her words, “I feel bad you felt pressured because of me.”
“Are you kidding? I escaped my family. I’m in a private jet where the bathroom has gold fixtures. I’m being treated like a
princess. I get to spend all of my life with my best friend at my side. The past twenty-four hours are the best of my life,
Zorah. I’m so happy.”
“I’m glad.”
“I wish you were happy too.”
“I guess for me, it doesn’t feel much like a fairy tale right now.”
“You’re really angry at Icaro?”
“He’s a jerk,” Zorah sat up suddenly. “I mean, how is it, a man can be so suave and sexy in one minute, telling you all the
right things and then the next minute come out with the garbage he spews?”
“What is the worst thing he’s said to you so far?”
“There are too many horrible things to count. Threatening to put a bullet in your head because I was at dinner with
another man was pretty awful, though he did admit he would never have shot you. It was an empty threat to make me
behave.”
She giggled, “Vodingo told me Icaro has a reputation for having no filter and simply saying what is on his mind.
Apparently, he tends to speak first, think second.”
“How is he second in command to the family?”
“He’s apparently notorious for,” Sidonia blushed, “having zero fucks to give.”
“Sidonia!” Zorah giggled at her friend’s language.
“Vodingo said it and he said it encapsulates Icaro best. He simply doesn’t care about anything. Vodingo said he’s been
angry an exceptionally long time.”
“Why?”
Sidonia shrugged, “he said since he was a teenage boy he wanted you.”
“It’s gross and creepy. What teenage boy wants a baby?”
“Vodingo said Icaro never once until the last few years ever mentioned you sexually. He always spoke of you as the one
he was meant to take care of and protect.” Sidonia shot a look at the closed door, “like a big brother but more.”
“It’s the more which freaks me out,” Zorah protested.
