Zorah decided the only thing worse than flying in a plane was landing in a plane. She’d kept her face firmly buried in
Icaro’s shoulder as the wheels touched the tarmac and then bounced multiple times before careening to a halt.
She’d managed to sleep in the bed as did Sidonia. Icaro and Vodingo woke them thirty minutes before touchdown and
put them in their seats, buckled them in and then chatted as if the things Zorah revealed earlier were never brought up.
“It wasn’t so bad,” he teased as he wiped a tear off her cheek with his thumb before pressing a kiss to her forehead.
“It was awful. Surely returning to the US we can do on a boat or something?”
He laughed at her words before unclipping her seatbelt and pulling her into a standing position. Hugging her to his side
he kissed her knuckles, “it gets easier each flight. We’ll be here a month or more so lots of time before you need to try
again.”
“Thank heavens,” she muttered.
They followed behind Dagoberto and his brothers who exited the aircraft first and Zorah giggled when she watched her
father-in-law take the steps two at a time to nearly run towards a gorgeous woman leaning casually against a car.
“Damn Dagoberto,” she muttered under her breath when he swept the woman up in his arms and kissed her as if out of
pure desperation. She leaned her head sideways to Icaro, “how long was he away from home?”
“A week.” Icaro shook his head. “She is his and he is hers and they don’t do well apart. I like my father showing my
mother affection and love.”
“That’s a lot of affection,” her eyes were trying to look everywhere but the couple, but they kept flicking back. Dagoberto
lifted his wife up in his arms, her legs hooked around his hips, and she was almost reclined on the car.
“Once, Dad was away for nearly a month. The car hadn’t even left the parking area, and it was rocking, and we could hear
them from here,” Icaro laughed as Zorah gave a gasp. “Love is beautiful, Zorah and even when it’s two old people
expression their love, it’s beautiful. My wish for us is to have a long and loving life as my parents have.”
“Where are we going?” she tried to slow their steps as Icaro walked her in the direction of his parents.
“I want you to meet my mother.”
“We can’t interrupt.”
“Yeah, right.”
“Icaro, they’re making out.”
“They’re three strokes off fucking but if I put you in the car and drive you away before my mother meets you, she will
have my head.”
“But –”
“Dad,” he called out, “if you could crawl off my mother for a few moments so I can introduce her new daughter it would
be appreciated. I’d like to take Zorah to our hotel so she can get some rest after such an eventful couple of days.”
Zorah looked to the ground sheepishly when Dagoberto lifted a finger behind his back at Icaro and then reluctantly
pulled away from his wife. She felt her cheeks flushing when she heard him whisper to his wife.
“I love you, my queen. When we are back in our room, I will show you how much you were missed.”
Zorah cleared her throat nervously as the woman brushed her hair back and stepped towards Zorah with a wide smile.
Zorah knew now where Icaro got his beautiful blue eyes and full lips as she took in the appearance of her new mother-inlaw.
“Oh Zorah, you are beautiful. Do you see her Dagoberto? She’s grown into such a beautiful girl. Eyes the color of
cinnamon, as Icaro always said, no?”
Zorah extended her hand, but the woman wasn’t having it. She pulled Zorah into a tight hug, squeezing her and rocking
her in her arms.
“My name is Avaline Lucchesi, but you can call me Mama or Mom. I’m incredibly happy to be introduced to you again.
The last time I saw you, you were just a tiny baby, and I got to hold you in my arms for a brief moment before Icaro
pulled you from me. He was so enamored with you.”
“Still am,” he called out with any hint of embarrassment. “Look at her. She’s perfect.”
“Nobody is perfect,” Zorah shot him a look.
“In my eyes you are perfect.” He winked at her. “Mama, Zorah is in desperate need of a new wardrobe. I let her know you
and my aunts would be taking her shopping tomorrow.”
“We will be ready to go by dawn!” Avaline gave Zorah’s bicep a squeeze. “Now, come here boy. I missed you. You
haven’t been home in months.” She yanked Icaro causing him to stumble forward and hugged him tight.
Zorah couldn’t stop her smile from pulling her cheeks as Icaro very sweetly kissed his mother’s cheeks and then her
forehead whispering how much he’d missed her too. He was truly a mama’s boy from the way she brushed his hair off
his forehead and stared lovingly into his eyes and questioned him on whether he was eating well and how many hours
he’d been sleeping each night.
She blushed when he winked at Zorah and said he hadn’t slept a wink the night before.
“Yes, but I bet it wasn’t because of what you’re alluding to. I know you scared the shit out of our sweet Zorah. The fact
she got into the plane willingly is nothing short of a miracle given how uncouth you can be.” She patted his cheek a bit
rougher than Zorah would have thought. “You be good to her. You only get one Lucchesi bride Icaro. You treat her like
she is your queen.”
“I admit I have made mistakes, but I intend to fix those immediately. I have apologized to my bride, and I intend to make
up for the errors.”
“I hope you do,” Avaline giggled as her husband dragged her backwards away from her son. “It seems someone is in a
hurry for us to leave.”
“Yes, and a correction to the time you’ll be shopping,” Dagoberto bit her ear, “it will not be at the crack of dawn. My first meeting tomorrow is not until nine. You won’t be leaving the hotel ahead of me.”
Zorah giggled as he swung Avaline up in his arms and carried her to the waiting car while Avaline waved back at Zorah
until she disappeared into the vehicle.
“She’s wonderful,” Zorah whispered under her breath.
“She is.” Icaro agreed and leaned to kiss Zorah’s forehead. “She is very distracted right now, but I promise in a month
you will be grateful to be returning to the US because she takes the term smother-mother to new heights.”
Zorah bit her bottom lip as she considered the possibility of having someone maternal love her. Perhaps it wasn’t going
to be a terrible thing to be a Lucchesi.
