Chapter 5
In that split second, I bit his arm hard, and only then did he release me, wincing in pain.
“Rita, you’ve really crazy!”
“If you don’t apologize right now, I swear I’ll go to the pet store and kill that damn cat, do you believe me?!”
I froze, staring at the man in front of me, who was becoming more and more unhinged. I gave a bitter, hollow laugh.
I believe you. Of course, I believe you.
But aside from Jesse, I have no other family in this world.
For Jesse, I could give up anything.

I gritted my teeth against the excruciating pain in my abdomen, staring into his bloodshot eyes.
Slowly, I spoke:
“If you lay a finger on it, I’ll kill your whole family.”
A trace of madness flickered in my eyes.
He was visibly taken aback.
My face was as pale as death.
I felt the liquid continuously trickiing beneath
- me.
Ethan finally realized something was terribly wrong.
2/6
He scooped me up and ran down the corridor, shouting for the nurse.
But it was too late…
With that one push, Ethan had unintentionally caused the loss of our child.
Perhaps it was fate.
Perhaps the sight of me lying in that hospital bed, barely hanging on to life, was too much for him to bear.
When he saw me open my eyes, he gently pulled me into his arms, terrified I might break.
“It’s okay, don’t be afraid. We’re still young We can have another child…”
I shoved him away, my voice barely a
3/6
whisper, yet it reverberated in the silent
room.
“Ethan, we will never have another child.”
Despite my weakness, my words cut through the stillness, louder than anything else.
I glanced at the strawberry cake on the table.
Ethan thought I might want to eat it.
He carefully brought it to me, hands trembling.
I took the cake from him and threw it into the trash without hesitation.
“I want a divorce.”
It wasn’t a question, but a declaration.
After being discharged from the hospital, I filed for divorce.
I entrusted a lawyer to handle everything on my behalf.
“Rita, do you really have to be so ruthless?”
“I made a mistake that every man in the world makes. Why can’t you just forgive me?”
He blocked my path, panic and anger in his voice.
I paused, quietly staring at him.
What kind of twisted worldview must he have to say something like that?
Ethan realized his words were inappropriate, so he grabbed my hand and lowered his
5/6
tone.
“What can I do to make you change your mind? What can I do to stop the divorce?”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
He’d cheated on me, tried to hurt my cat, and even caused the death of our child.
If I didn’t seek revenge, it would be a mercy.
Why did he think there was still any chance of reconciliation?
“What can you do?” I repeated, “Let me think.”
“You need to expose Selima’s actions at the company, reveal that she poisoned Jesse, publicly fire her, and cut off all ties with her. Can you do that?”
