Chapter 2
Amelia was beside herself with excitement, pacing with nervous energy up and down the hallway, her hands twisting restlessly.
The moment she saw my newborn son, she hurried over, eagerly clutching the baby to her chest, her eyes twinkling with joy, cheeks flushed with delight.
The nurse couldn’t stifle her laughter and playfully quipped, “What’s your relationship to this little one? You seem even more thrilled than the mother does!”
Amelia blushed, momentarily embarrassed, and started to explain when she noticed my silence. “Seraphina, I just couldn’t help it! Milo is simply too adorable, and I accidentally gave him a kiss. You’re not

upset, right?”
I gave a small, reassuring smile and replied serenely, “Of course not. My work keeps me so busy that I sometimes overlook my family. I truly appreciate you helping out with Milo.”
Relieved, both Amelia and Maxwell visibly relaxed.
My son approached me, his innocent eyes meeting mine as he inquired, “Mom, are you heading to the office today, or will you come to kindergarten with Dad and me?”
I gently tousled his hair and asked, “What does Milo want Mommy to do?”
He answered without missing a beat, “I want Mommy to work, and Aunt Amelia can take Daddy and me to kindergarten!”

As if sensing Milo might say something unintended, Maxwell quickly hugged him, turning to me to say, “Sweetheart, Milo just doesn’t want to pull you away from your work. Last time, he even told me not to disturb you because of how hard you’re working.”
Amelia nodded in agreement. “Milo is a thoughtful little guy. Only someone as exceptional as you, Seraphina, could have such a well–behaved son.”
With a smile, I reassured my son, “Alright, let’s follow Milo’s plan.”
Thrilled, Milo bounced around, ignoring my presence as he grabbed Amelia’s and Maxwell’s hands, pulling them eagerly toward the door.

As I watched their cheerful trio depart, I allowed myself a soft smile, then retreated to my study to continue my unfinished tasks.
Perhaps they believed I was too trusting to notice anything unusual, allowing Amelia’s confidence to grow with each day.
Initially, she would spend time with Maxwell in my absence. Now, even when I was at home, she always found reasons to visit.
“Seraphina, I’ve been learning to cook and wanted to make something special to thank you for everything.”
“Seraphina, I just returned from the countryside and brought some local treats for you!”
“Seraphina, I’ve quit my job to start a new business, but I’m a bit short on funds. Can

you lend me a hand?”
Deep down, I recognized Amelia’s visits were merely pretexts to see my son and Maxwell, yet I never turned her away.
Whenever she came, I welcomed her warmly, agreeing to all her requests.
Maxwell seemed to revel in the situation. Each time Amelia appeared, a smile would involuntarily play on his lips. Occasionally, he even openly flirted with her in my presence, sharing clandestine smiles and glances.
Even my son grew increasingly fond of Amelia, to the point of buying her a pair of slippers for her frequent visits.
This routine persisted until my son’s college
entrance exams.

On the morning the results were announced, Amelia arrived at our house, eager to wait with us.
When we saw my son’s surprisingly low score, Maxwell’s expression clouded with irritation.
“How could you do so poorly?” he demanded.
But my son remained unfazed.
