Chapter 6
“Do you and Frank have any common topics?” she asked with a smile.
“I don’t think so. After all, you two are in such different fields,” she answered her own question, as if sending me a message.
I shot her a glance before turning my eyes back to the window.
We stopped in front of a restaurant, and unsurprisingly, as Joanna had predicted, it was Azizam Restaurant.
I didn’t know how to feel anymore. It felt as if this wasn’t our wedding anniversary at all.
They had already ordered food before we arrived. Frank pushed a lavishly wrapped

box toward me, his voice soft. “Anna, I know you’ve always liked this brand. Open it and see”
Inside was the necklace I had admired for a long time. I picked it up and examined it closely. Sure enough, I saw “Anna & Frank” engraved on the back.
I let out a sarcastic laugh, about to speak, but Joanna’s voice cut me off.
“Anna, what’s that expression? Don’t you like the necklace? I spent so long helping Frank pick it out,” she said, almost smugly.
“Thank you for your effort” I replied flatly.
Only then did Frank seem to notice that something was off.
“Anna, you don’t like it? If you don’t, I’ll go

with you to pick one you like, Frank said earnestly.
I looked into his eyes, seeing my reflection in them. It felt ironic. How naive he was to think I’d still be charmed by such gestures.
“Why is there the third person on our wedding anniversary?” I asked directly.
Joanna’s face fell in an instant, her voice tinged with hurt. “Anna, are you upset that I’m interrupting your time with Frank?”
“Anna, don’t misunderstand. Joanna just came back to the country, and she doesn’t have many friends here. She’s all alone, so I thought I’d bring her along for dinner. It’s not a big deal. You’re always so understanding” Frank explained hurriedly.
“I am understanding” I said coldly, “but it

depends on circumstances.”
“Anna, if you don’t want me here, then I’ll leave. I didn’t mean to bother you.” Joanna’s voice wavered as she quickly got up and fled.
Frank immediately stood up when he saw her leaving. His steps were swift as he rushed after her, but he suddenly turned to look at me. “Anna, stay here and eat. I’ll go check on her–make sure nothing happens to her.
With that, he dashed out.
I didn’t understand how a person could change so quickly. Had he been too good at hiding his true self, leaving no trace of deception? Or had I simply trusted him too much?

The dishes kept arriving, each one a reminder of Joanna’s preferences, of what Frank thought I liked. I sat there alone, my heart getting colder and colder as time went by. The romantic candlelit dinner, the kind of thing I’d once dreamed of, now felt like the cruelest joke.
“Ma’am, would you like me to warm up your food?” a waiter asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
It took me a moment to realize I had been waiting for so long that the food had already grown cold.
“No, just bring the check,” I said, not wanting to wait any longer or ask any more questions.
The food didn’t even look appetizing anymore. It made me sick just looking at it.
