Chapter 12
Not long after, he confessed his feelings for me. Having just gone through the failure of my marriage, I was afraid of committing again. I feared it would just be another man with a double life–one thing on the surface, and something completely different beneath.
I shared my past with him, along with the reasons behind my hesitation. He didn’t give up on me, despite my rejection.
It had been a while since I’d heard anything from Frank or Joanna, but suddenly, I received an invitation from Joanna.
It turned out they were getting married and wanted me to attend. Her triumphant gaze almost leaped off the page.

If that’s what you want, then so be it.
When Evan heard I was going to my ex–husband’s wedding, he became insistent, using all kinds of persuasion to get me to bring him along. He tried every tactic to wear me down.
After much pestering, I reluctantly agreed, but made it clear he was not to cause any trouble.
Soon, the day of their wedding arrived. As I stepped into the venue, I was struck by how familiar it all seemed–the style was exactly what I had originally chosen, but Frank had rejected it.
When they saw me arrive, Joanna eagerly grabbed Frank’s arm and walked over to greet me. With a beaming smile, she said, “Anna, you made it! Is this your boyfriend?”

Their eyes locked onto Evan, and just as I was about to respond, he beat me to it.
“Yes, I’m Anna’s boyfriend. Hello, nice to meet you both, I’m Evan,” he said with a smile.
I could feel a pair of eyes fixed on me. Without even looking, I knew exactly who it was. Evan noticed it too, and pulled me closer into his arms, shielding me from Frank’s gaze.
I saw Frank’s face turn ashen, and the harsh words that followed hit like a slap.
“Anna, you’re in such a hurry, already jumping into another man’s arms. Can’t you live without a man?”
Before I could even respond, Evan snapped.

“What right do you have to say anything? You cheated during your marriage, and now you’ve knocked up another woman before even getting a divorce. How dare you speak? Anna and you are divorced, so she has every right to make her own choices. Who she chooses is none of your business.”
More and more guests had gathered at the entrance
and as they overheard our exchange, whispers and pointed fingers began to circle around Frank and Joanna.
“Alright, alright, let’s go inside. The ceremony is about to start,” Joanna rushed to intervene, trying to steer the situation away from the growing discomfort.
Evan looked like he wanted to say more, but I stopped him. There was no need to make a scene on such an occasion. Let them get

married smoothly and avoid causing harm to anyone else.
As I watched them exchange vows, I felt as though I was living in a different lifetime. We had once stood in that same spot, making promises to each other, but now everything had turned to dust.
Noticing my change in demeanor, Evan wrapped me in his arms. I instantly snapped back to reality and gently pushed him away.
“I’m not trying to make you feel burdened. I just wanted to comfort you. You can lean on me today, that’s all.”
I knew he was trying to ease my pain.
“It’s all in the past now. I’ve moved on,” I replied, taking a deep breath and calming myself.

“Then does that mean you’ll consider me?” Evan asked, his voice playful.
“Let’s see how you do.”
“Then I still have a chance” he said, his face lighting up.
I still couldn’t quite understand what he liked about me.
