Liam’s face darkened. He hadn’t expected that, at this moment, I could still rebut him so logically, without giving him an ounce of face.
Clearly, he was suppressing his anger. He quietly sent me a message: “Eunie, this time it’s my fault. I love only you. Just help me this last time. Let Clove off, she’s young and doesn’t understand.”
It was laughable. He always asked me to be understanding, to give way to this person and that one. But who would give me the same consideration?
Chloe was young, so I was supposed to be understanding. His mother was older, so I was meant to be patient. And now, because

he claimed to love me so much, I was expected to make allowances again?
But what was the result? For his refusal to have children, his mother had cursed me for two years. He’d taken care of my student to the point of getting her into his bed. He had beaten me, causing my miscarriage, and now he was trying to destroy the career I loved. Was “letting go” supposed to mean letting these ungrateful people take more from me?
The pain from the beating seemed to transcend time and space, coming back to me all over again.
The injustice inside me grew stronger, crashing through the last of my defenses.
I lay in bed, unable to move, summoning the last of my strength to press the call button.

At that moment, I didn’t want to see anyone.
The doctor arrived quickly, and upon seeing so many people in the room, his face darkened. He started ushering them out.
“Who let you all in without notifyin hospital?”
the
“The patient had a miscarriage! She’s bleeding heavily and needs to rest!”
“And you, the reporter! Who authorized you to interview in the hospital room? Show me your press pass and consent forms!”
The doctor quickly cleared out the unnecessary people. Since Liam was my family, the doctor had no right to kick him out, though he frowned and left him inside.
Liam looked regretful, but his eyes still

betrayed a hint of relief.
“I’m sorry, Eunie. I didn’t know you were pregnant, otherwise, I wouldn’t have acted impulsively and hurt you.”
“Take care of yourself now. Since the child is gone, you can stop threatening me with my parents. Let’s forget about the baby thing. You’ve made a scene, and Clove’s been crying. You should apologize to her. Pregnant women shouldn’t cry too much, it’s bad for their health.”
in moments of extreme frustration, laughter seemed to be the only thing that came naturally. His smile was barely contained at the corners of his lips. How could he even say something like that?
For so long, I had been deceiving myself, and now I finally saw through the man I had

been lying beside all this time. I couldn’t be bothered to engage with him anymore. Slowly, I pulled my hand from his, grabbed the disinfectant wipes on the cabinet, and began rubbing my hands vigorously.
“We should get a divorce. The divorce papers will be sent to you in the next couple of days. You can go back to your Chloe now, after all, pregnant women are prone to mood swings.”
As soon as I said this, Liam’s face grew impatient again.
Do we really have to make a scene like this? Her husband has infertility issues, and I’m just helping her out. Even if the child in her womb is mine, so what? Clove already said she’d tell people it’s her husband’s child.”
“She can’t have children, and her husband was going to divorce her, you’re her teacher,

a senior, can you really bear to see her suffer like this?”
“And you hit her in front of so many people. It’s all over the internet now. Think carefully, without me, who would want you?”
I couldn’t stand to listen to him anymore. The man in front of me, now stripped of any illusion of love, made me feel no desire to communicate at all. He kept babbling on, oblivious to how repulsive he had become.
Just looking at it made me sick to my stomach.
“Eunie, apologize to me and Clove publicly. I can forgive you. We can go back to our good life.”
I was fed up with hearing him, so I half–heartedly nodded a few times. Seeing

that I had “agreed,” Liam’s face lit up with triumph. He felt like he had finally put me in my place. As he walked toward the door, chatting on his phone, he looked downright pleased.
“Mom, Eunie’s agreed to apologize. She’s not going to make a fuss about the baby. See, I told you, the media works wonders. Otherwise, how else would she listen?”
“Of course, it’s my son’s doing. After this, she won’t have a job and will be more dependent on you…
”
Just as he left and closed the door, I fainted, slipping into a deep sleep.
