The first day back after the break marked a fresh start for Lilith. She had spent the past few days resting well, so she woke up early, feeling energized as she made her way to school.
She was definitely ahead of schedule–when she arrived on campus, it was nearly deserted, with only a few students scattered across the classroom. Liana wasn’t there yet, and Lilith guessed she was probably still lounging in bed, reluctant to get up.
Breakfast had been a bit excessive that morning. Winifred had prepared an array of dishes, and Lilith, urged by Winifred’s insistence, had eaten more than she normally would. Now, her stomach felt uncomfortably full, and she couldn’t concentrate on her studies. So, she decided to take a walk around the large artificial lake behind the school to clear her mind.
While wandering aimlessly, she happened to pass a classroom building.
There, she saw a girl surrounded by a group of students. The girl was visibly trembling, clearly frightened. The group seemed to be handling her roughly, and one of them even kicked the girl, who was sitting on the ground, while muttering something unintelligible.
Though Lilith couldn’t hear the exact words, it was clear that something unpleasant was happening.
She hurried toward them, but by the time she got closer, the group had already dispersed, chatting and laughing as they strolled down a set of stairs.
Lilith jogged over, intent on helping the girl, but the girl easily brushed her wrist off.
For a brief moment, Lilith stood still, taken aback. She noticed a faint white icon flickering above the girl’s head. It wasn’t very noticeable, but it caught Lilith’s attention. It seemed like the girl’s storyline hadn’t fully activated yet.
Amid the blurry light, Lilith saw the girl’s name and role–Sydney Hodgson, the Villainous Female Supporting Character.
Sydney quickly stood up, moving with a surprising grace that betrayed no sign of the fear or weakness she had shown earlier. In fact, she didn’t seem injured at all.
She dusted off her clothes and looked at Lilith with a blank expression.
Պ
“Can I help you?” Sydney asked in a neutral tone.
Lilith, still unsure, asked gently, “Are you
Sydney raised an eyebrow, her face hardening slightly. “Of course, I’m okay,” she said, stepping toward Lilith with a calculating gaze. Then, with an unexpected smile, she added, “Don’t think that the person who kicked me was anything special. A few more could show up, and I’d knock them all down. Besides, if something serious had happened, do you really think I’d be standing here chatting with you?”
Lilith was confused. If she’s so capable of standing her ground, why didn’t she fight back? She hesitated before asking, “Then why didn’t you fight back?”
Sydney’s tone turned colder. “Fight back? Do you know who they are and who I am? Those rich people? They can make my life hell. Fighting back is useless. It only feeds their satisfaction in bullying me.”
Sydney slowly closed the gap between them, her eyes scanning Lilith’s luxurious outfit with obvious disdain. A sharp laugh escaped her lips, tinged with bitterness.
“Do you think I’m some kind of saint?” she asked, her voice colder now. “Or do you think you’re some kind of savior, standing there, saying empty words, thinking you can change anything?”

Lilith wasn’t angered by her words. She understood that everyone had their own path to follow, and no one could truly alter someone else’s destiny. She simply shook her head.
Her voice was soft but steady. “I’m not a good person. And I’m definitely no savior. To most people, I’m probably just a nobody.”
Sometimes, when you met a stranger whose life would never cross yours, it felt easier to speak the truth than to open up to those you were closest to.

At least there weren’t any risks, and you wouldn’t embarrass yourself.
“Your elbow is bleeding. Stay here. I’ll grab some disinfectant and band–aids.”
Sydney snorted in response, giving her a quick glance but not saying a word.
When Lilith returned with the supplies, the area where Sydney had been was already empty.
Back in the classroom, most of the students had arrived, and the bell signaling the start of class was about to ring.

Liana glanced at the supplies in Lilith’s hands, then quickly scanned her from head to toe.. “Wait, Lilith, did you get hurt?”
“No, I ran into a girl who was hurt, so I brought this for her.”
“Oh, okay.” Liana seemed to relax, but then asked, “Where is she? Is she alright?”
“I don’t know. She left before I could do anything.”
Liana fell silent.
The end of the semester was approaching, and with it came the division between the science and arts tracks. Seats and classes would be rearranged based on test scores.
Liana slouched over her desk, looking miserable. Lilith, noticing her mood, asked, “What’s going on? Why the sad face?”
Liana stood up, her expression grave. “Lilith, the class divisions are coming soon, and based on my grades, I won’t be in the same class as you. We won’t be desk partners anymore!” Her voice was filled with despair.
“It’s fine,” Lilith said, offering a reassuring smile. “Even if we’re in different classes, we can still hang out. We’ll see each other all the time.”
Despite Lilith’s comforting words, Liana’s disappointment didn’t seem to ease.
After a moment, Lilith added, “You know what? There’s still almost two months left, and the material isn’t too tough. You can catch up. If you need help, I’ll teach you. We’ll go at our own pace. Don’t stress about the grades just yet.”
“Okay!” Liana’s mood brightened instantly. “Let’s work hard together!”
“I’m fine, but you … ” Lilith chuckled and pulled her wrist away from Liana’s grasp. She quickly snatched the novel Liana had hidden under her textbook and held it up, ready for class. “This is going to be taken away for now.”
For a moment, there was silence, and then Liana let
out
a
soft, exaggerated whine.
The next morning, Lilith placed a notebook in front of Liana, instructing her to memorize the material inside and use it to answer questions.
Liana flipped through the pages and then looked up at Lilith, her eyes wide in disbelief. “You didn’t stay up all night making this for me, did you?”
“I did,” Lilith replied sleepily, rubbing her eyes. “This is just for one subject. I’ll help you organize the others in a few days. Make sure to go over the notes I take in class, too.”
“No way!” Liana exclaimed, throwing her arms around Lilith’s waist and burying her face in her shoulder, rubbing against her. affectionately. “Lilith, you’re like my savior! I’m never letting you go!”
Lilith, the “savior,” had indeed stayed up all night. The next morning, she struggled to stay awake in class and ended up dozing through two periods. When she finally woke up, she was surprised to see Liana, usually the most energetic person in the room, bent over her desk, scribbling notes with determination.
The next day, when Lilith arrived in class, she noticed that Liana was already there. She glanced at her watch and then at the clock on the wall, wondering if she had misread the time.
Liana, with noticeable dark circles under her eyes, was still reading. As Lilith sat down, she could even smell the faint, bitter scent of black coffee in the air.

Looking at the crumpled papers on Liana’s desk, Lilith suddenly recalled something from the start of the school year. Liana had said getting into this school had been pure luck, almost like stepping in dog poop. But now, seeing how hard Liana was working, it seemed that maybe there was more to it than just luck.
At the very least, it wasn’t the full story.
