Chapter Twenty: Aurielle DuVall
I took a cab to the restaurant thirty minutes before Cassiel was supposed to arrive. I was shocked to find him already there. He looked out of place, his hair was slicked back in a neat and classy way. His golden eyes moved around the restaurant as though searching for someone.
He looked like he’d come straight from the council. He wore a button–up white shirt, which he’d rolled the sleeves, and placed his long coat jacket on the chair next to him. I was stunned for a moment until his gaze landed on mine.
He beckoned me over, and I nervously went.
“Alpha Cassiel… um-” the restaurant was empty. Come to think of it, I didn’t even give the lady at the reception my name. She had just motioned for me to go in.
“Relax, I didn’t want the nosy people carrying my face all over the papers. So I rented out the entire restaurant for the next two
hours.”
That is a rough sentence to process. He did what? For how long? How much money does he have? (D)
He pushed his seat back, walking over to me. Cassiel pulled out a seat across from him, and I sat. Thanking him like some nervous
nilly who couldn’t get her thoughts in order.
I’m just baffled that he would rent out a restaurant. That’s a lot of money for two hours. But I also understand, our meeting could be misunderstood by nosy people.
He returned to his chair and called for the waiter.
“Are you hungry?”
I almost said no, but then I reminded myself that my health mattered now more than it ever did. I can’t skip meals.
I nodded, and we ordered something. With alcohol free drinks.
While sipping my fruity drink, I brought up the topic for this entire meetup.
“I have to go through the summons to end my marriage.”
His eyebrows met briefly, “You mentioned. A summons is a difficult path to take. The council can’t just summon an alpha for a meeting, we need to take into account his schedule. The only way this will be rushed is if you’re being abused and have proof. Otherwise… it could take months for it to be approved.”
My spirits dimmed. That sucks. I knew this path was the hard way out, I was hoping not to make this even more difficult, and yet
here I am. This sucks.

I let out an exasperated sound as his fingers moved higher, then away from me. Cassiel’s eyes darkened, but his expression was
as neutral as ever.
“I’ve tried everything, but he won’t do it. There must be a way for the council to speed up the summons.
He hummed, gulping his mocktail. “There is… but it isn’t safe. Divorces are tough enough, but for a luna to be the one filing for a
summons, if she isn’t in danger of being harmed by the alpha, the council will shove your file back. You need a really good reason
to file for a summons, or in most cases, it’s dismissed. And lying about it won’t win you any favors.”
I thought about this for a small second before admitting it out loud to him.
“I’m pregnant.”
Cassiel coughed, his eyes going wide. I clutched my glass, wondering if telling him was the right thing to do. But perhaps this can
be my reason.
He grabbed a napkin and wiped his mouth.
“That is… why would you choose to divorce your husband in this state?”
“I…. he doesn’t believe…. It’s complicated. I just know I don’t want my child to be born while I’m still married to him.”
He got
got this look on his face that bothered me.
“Aurielle, don’t bring that up in your divorce.”
I was astonished by his request, but the seriousness in his eyes told me this wasn’t a joke.
“Why not?”
“Your husband can argue that you’re not in the right mind to be asking for a divorce. Don’t mention it at all if you want to get out
of this marriage. It’s one thing for you to be showing once the divorce is halfway through; no one would argue with you then. But at this stage, you’d be denied until the baby is born.”
Oh my god, I don’t know why, but I burst out into tears. Why is it so hard for me to have my freedom?
Why is the world against me?
