Chapter Twenty–Four: Matthias Crowe
After the ordeal of the night before, I knew I needed to keep some distance from Aurielle. Nerissa never mentioned the way her
parents treated Aurielle. She always told me they loved Auri more than they did her. I mean, it’s expected. She is their biological
daughter.
I assumed they tried to love them both, but I believed Aurielle was the favorite. To see him slap her made me feel angry. Who does that? Who hits their own daughter because she’s getting a divorce? That’s disgusting.
I had to throw him out, and now I don’t understand what to do about this feeling clawing at me. How long has this been
happening? Has Aurielle just hidden her parents‘ mistreatment of her from her sister and me?
I almost laughed at myself. Why would Aurielle come to me with her problems?
Still, it doesn’t feel right knowing that she’d been…. I mean, it’s not like I treated her any better, but it’s not like I hit her even
once. I wasn’t raised that way.
Sleep eluded me that night. I hated the way the sight of her being hit by someone much larger, someone who should have
respected himself and his daughter, upset me.
The next morning, I tried to stasy away from aurielle. But that quickly changed when I came out of the room at eight in the morning, and had found out from a servant that she had left at seven.
Where on earth does she have to go that early?
My mind quickly made the connection. To the council obviously to get the divorce process started. I ran my fingers back and forth through my hair. She’s that desperate to get out of our marriage that she left so early before the council opens at nine.
That’s crazy. This woman is crazy. I’m okay with that though. In thirty days our divorce will be processed, we’ll have one meeting with the council to explain our reasons for separating, and be done with it. Then i can just put my full focus on being the best
alpha i can be.
I ate breakfast with a worry at the back of my mind, then I left the house for my office. Lena was there, she’d handled most of
yesterday’s work along with my assistant.
I have alot of people working under me, so my beta doesn’t have that much to do unless it’s a very busy day. I don’t like suffocating those who contribute to helping run this pack.
She stood in front of my office with a big smile on her face, looking like the world was right. I wonder if something good happened to her.
“Alpha Crowe, good morning. How are you feeling?”
“Good.” i answered as i walked past her and into my office. Perhaps I should send Aurielle a text. Just to find out if she really went to the council building at the crack of dawn. It isn’t safe to do that.

“Um, so I got some incredible news for you. Alpha Cassiel has announced that he will be considering forming a close bond with
one of the nearby packs to trade in help, advice, and most of all, resources and security. Having the ravager pack as a close ally would be the most incredible thing ever.
She handed me a piece of paper. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. This is incredible. This could be my big move to getting invited to become a council member. It’s every alpha’s dream.
“And you think we have a shot?”
Lena grinned. “Of course we do. I listed out everything our pack can offer. If he chooses us, we get to finalize things in person.
Just read over what I wrote, and then we can decide whether to send it over or not. But, here me out.” She handed me another
piece of paper. “Because alphas can get rowdy and crazy, Alpha Cassiel is asking that the alphas select a trusted beta to mediate
things between both packs. It’s an incredible job. A strong beta is a reflection of the alpha they work for. This could impress him. I
could impress him.”
That part I wasn’t expecting. I’d have to think about it.
“Thank you lena. Leave the files here, and these forms, I’ll think about it.”
She smiled and gave me a cautious bow, but didn’t move.
“Is something wrong?”
“Oh, nothing. Um, did you notice anything different?” I looked at her, really looked at her. She was wearing a satin pink dress that looked like it was one strong wind away from exposing her underwear.
“That isn’t appropriate for the workplace. Please change it. Thank you.”
Her smile faltered, and she looked embarrassed.
“I’m sorry, are you planning on leaving work to go on a date?”
She shook her head. “Sorry. I just thought you liked the color pink”
Η
I knit my brows. When did I ever say that? Aurielle knows I like pink on Nerissa, but I don’t go around telling everyone.
I really should stop drinking whenever something is bothering me.
“I don’t. Did you wear this for me?”
“No, no, I didn’t. I um… yeah, I’m going on a date after. But I have some spare clothes I’ll change into.” She dropped the files and
hurried out of my office.
That was weird. I ignored it though, alot of weird things happen with Lena, but she’s a nice girl.
I read through the form, my chance to get close to Alpha Cassiel, and then close to the council. But… this is a risk. Can I trust Lena
to mediate between our two packs?
I sighed, and my phone chose that moment to beep.

I picked it up and saw a text from one of my friends.
It was a photo. A photo of a girl, beautiful, the sun shining over her and making her practically shine. There was a man next to her
who was opening the passenger side door for her. Glasses on, dressed like a wealthy CEO. It took me a second to realize that the
absolutely stunning girl was Aurielle.
And the man was Ca
Cassiel.
My friend captioned it: I didn’t know your wife was close with Alpha Aldric. That’s epic.
No, no, it isn’t.
