Chapter 61
Sapphire.
I thought about it, I really did over six years and I still came to the same decision.
Aragon did not deserve to know, he didn’t care about me and I would never be a priority for him, not when he has vengeance and power to think of.
It wasn’t a fact that bothered me but it was what it was. I had learned to accept that maybe I wasn’t cut out for love.
My father didn’t love me enough so why should my mate do so? I kept to my end of the deal and stayed away. I built a life for myself and I was proud of it.
“Sapphire,” I heard my name being called and looked up.
Leah was staring at me with a curious look, “You were miles away,”
I shook my head, “I am so sorry, I was just in my head. I have thought about it and I can’t tell him. Telling him won’t do me or Charlie any good right
now.”
“Why not?”
“We slept together just once, it was no big deal. It doesn’t mean I will ignore the other red flags or things that he has done to me. I made a deal with Benita not to contact him, I am sure that meant even in cases like his.”
Sapphire,”
“No, I am not going to do it. Did he look for me? Or did he go ahead to marry Millicent?”
The look on Leah’s face became more downcast and I knew something was up. She shook her head sadly and it raised my antenna.
“What happened?”
“I never thought I would be the type to defend him after everything he did to you but he needs to know. Everything changed when you left, so much that I can’t even begin to explain. He became miserable and no, he did not marry Millicent. He used all the resources to look for you and that made him weak. So weak that Benita used it to ride him,”
“Why are you telling me all of this? It is not my business,”
“I am telling you because you have punished him enough, it’s time for you to come back. The whole pack is falling apart because the Alpha doesn’t have his mate by his side,” she said.
I tensed, all the bones in my body tensed one after the other. I really looked at her since she has come here, not overruled by emotions.
I was so happy and excited to see her again that I forgot common sense.
“Punishment? You think I was punishing him? I can’t believe you would say something like that to me,”
“Look,” she started to say,
I held up a hand, “No, you lpok, you were the one who consoled me while he dealt with me. He chose vengeance over the mate bond and treated me like a fool, why are you calling it a punishment?”
‘Sapphire, as your best friend, I know…”
“That’s the thing, I don’t know if you are here as my best friend or as the pack’s female beta,” I said.
Her face dropped like she couldn’t believe what I was saying but I was the one surprised at her actions. All the excitement I had earlier over her presence faded away into suspicions.
‘I am sorry it felt like I wasn’t supportive of you. I came here as your best friend because I missed you, but I was just talking,”
Her body language screamed honesty but I just couldn’t believe it,
“Why then would you call it punishment when you know what I had been through? That hurts, Leah. Others could say this but not you, you were there. You comforted me every step of the way and you encouraged me to leave when I told you,”
She sighed, “I am sorry, Sapphire. Please believe me, I came here with no evil intentions. I just needed to see you so I feigned a business trip just to come here.”
“What’s happening in the pack?” I asked.
It doesn Leoncern you, that is not the reason why Leame to see you,”
I know but I am asking because I am curious about it now,” I told her.
There had to be something bothering her which is why she came all the way to see me.
“The pack needs you, I am not saying it because you are here. Like I said, I don’t know the deal Aragon made with Benita but he didn’t hold up his end of the deal and we are suffering because of it. She has completely taken over the pack and she has established her dominance. The Alpha can’t do anything about it because he is still hung up on you, he keeps searching for you.”
Something akin to Panic hit me from nowhere and my eyes widened,
“Dad you tell anyone you are coming here?” I asked,
She shook her head, ‘No, I didn’t. I won’t expose you like that.”

I eyed her skeptically before I nodded, “I have spent the last six years alone, with my son and with my company. I don’t want that to change. I am sorry you guys are having problems in the pack but that’s not even my problem. The whole pack treated me like I was some sort of venereal disease and it won’t change because of what I am associated with. You are the only person that cared about me in that pack so I can’t help, I am sorry.”
“I understand, this is why I said I didn’t want to bother you. We would sort it out on our own. I was surprised to see Charlie, my investigator didn’t
uncover that.”
“You checked me out?”
“I am sorry, I had to find out where you were. It was killing me that I didn’t know all this while.” she said.
I nodded, I mean I couldn’t do anything about it. I missed her too but today showed me that we had different goals. She thought coming to see me would convince me to go back and save the pack but it wasn’t my pack.
It might make me a mean person but I was never welcomed there, I was treated like an outsider and made a slave for their pleasure, I don’t know how she thought I would forget all that and follow her simply because her Alpha is miserable.
He brought it on himself and now, he was paying the price for the power he desperately wanted. Benita also wanted power but she needed the connections too, too bad he didn’t marry that bitch, Millicent. He chose to suffer.
A part of me felt flattered that he had been miserable without me but another part of me felt that he was only showing his feelings because I wanted to reject him.
The mistake years ago gave me my wonderful son and for that, I was glad. I couldn’t see myself without Charlie, he was the reason I pushed on and made a name for myself.
I would tell Aragon one day but it would be when I want it, not because of circumstances. I looked up when Leah stood up, she gave me a smile that didn’t reach her eyes,
“Let me get going, I would see you some other time,”
“You too,” I reached for her in a side hug.
I watched her enter the car and drive off till I was able to breathe again. I kept looking out the window and jumped out of my skin when Charlie
snuck behind me,
“What did she want?”
My hand flew to my chest, “Jesus, you scared me,”
he shrugged, “sorry but what did she want?”
“She is an old friend of mine and she wanted to reconnect. you were still little when you first met her,”
“Okay then, was she talking about my father?”
“Honey, yes but not in the way you think. She was trying to convince me to let you see your dad”
“What did you say?”
“That I would think about it.”

Yes, I told my child everything about his father including his second marriage. Charlie understood even though I felt bad that he didn’t have any male figure in his life. I just hope I remedy that before it becomes worse.
