Chapter 13: The Letter
Kate
Kent barged into my room without knocking, like he always did.
“You‘ re late for breakfast,” he said.
“I didn’t know I was on a schedule,” I replied, tightening my robe and glaring at him.
“You‘ re not,” he replied, entering without permission.
“But I figured I’d save you from
wallowing all day.”
“Wallowing? I’m not wallowing.”
“Sure, you’re not.”

He dropped onto the edge of my bed, causing it to creak.
“But judging by how you’ve been hiding up here, I’d bet it has something to do

with a certain Alpha showing up
yesterday.”
“Don’t start.”
Kent raised his hands in mock surrender, grinning.
“I’m just saying, if you need to vent or throw something, I’m here. Preferably not at me.”
I turned away, heading for the balcony.
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
A knock at the door interrupted the conversation. The door opened, and a young wolf stepped in, holding an envelope.
“Luna Kate, this was left at the border.”
My stomach sank. I didn’t need to ask who it was from.
“Let me guess… Tyson?”
The wolf nodded, handing me the letter before retreating.

“Don’t,” Kent said firmly.
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t read it. You know it’s going to mess with your head.”
I tore it, anyway, ignoring his annoyed sigh.
“Of course.”
Kate,
I failed you. I should‘ ve told you the truth, but I was too proud, too weak. Stella lied about everything, and the baby isn’t mine. She told me there were herbs she
could take to conceive, and I believed her. I was desperate to give the pack an heir, and I let that desperation blind me. You deserved better. I’ll regret losing you for the rest of my life.
-Tyson
I crumpled the letter and tossed it onto the
floor.

“Well?” Kent asked.
“He admitted what I already knew.”
“And?”
“And nothing! It doesn’t change
anything.‘
“Doesn’t it?”
“What do you want me to say? That I forgive him? That I’ll go running back?”
“No. I want you to admit that you‘ re still letting him control you.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Isn’t it? You crumpled his letter like it meant nothing, but you‘ re still thinking about every word.”
I opened my mouth to argue but stopped.
“Kate, you don’t owe him anything. Let him go.
His words were calm but relentless, hitting me like a hammer.

“I don’t know how,” I admitted.
“Start by realizing you‘ re not the same. woman he left behind. You‘ ve changed. You‘ re stronger.”
I clenched my fists, hating how his words. chipped away at my defenses.
“I need air,” I muttered, pushing past him.
The lake was quiet. I sat on the edge, still clutching the crumpled letter. Tyson‘ s words replayed in my mind. I tossed the letter into the water, watching it sink slowly.
“Symbolic,” Kent said from behind me.
“Following me now?”
“More like babysitting,” he replied, dropping down beside me.
I glanced at him, his easy smirk softening something inside me.
“You‘ re relentless.”

“So, I’ve been told.”
For a moment, we sat in silence.
“Did it fix things?” Kent asked eventually.
“Not really,” I admitted.
“Good. That means you‘ re human.”
I huffed out a laugh.
“I don’t understand why this was such a
big deal to you.”

“Because you‘ re my mate, and you’re worth it.‘

The sincerity in his voice stole the air from my lungs. For once, I didn’t have a snarky comeback.
That night, I lay in bed restlessness and confused. Tyson’s words and Kent‘ s steady belief in me circling in my mind like an endless loop. Sleep came in waves, pulling me into a restless dream. In it, Tyson stood before me, his hands outstretched, pleading and desperate. I

reached for him, but he slipped further into the shadows, leaving me grasping nothing. Then, Kent appeared. He didn’t speak. Kent just reached out. This time, when I grabbed, he didn’t waver and just pulled me up.
I woke up with my heart steady, like the realization settling over me. Tyson was my past, and I need to let go. But Kent? He saw me and was real to me. I knew what I had to do now. It was time for me to accept the bond with Kent.
