19 Desperation

Savvy’s world was crumbling. Her carefully constructed lies, the
manipulations that had kept her in control, were all beginning to unravel. But desperation has a way of pushing people to do things they wouldn’t normally consider, and Savvy, with her back against the wall, was willing to go to any lengths to regain her power.
She had a plan–a new, more dangerous play. Harvey’s mother, whom she had once charmed with her sweet demeanor, was her target now. Savvy‘ s mind worked quickly as she framed the narrative: Harvey had abandoned her overseas, leaving her vulnerable and alone. She knew that Harvey‘ s mother, a woman with a strong sense of family, would want to know the truth, and Savvy was counting.
on that.

With a sense of urgency, Savvy arranged to meet Harvey’s mother, playing the part of the wounded, wronged woman. She rehearsed her words, ensuring every detail of the story was in place. She had to make this work–her reputation and future with Nicolas depended on it.
When Harvey’s mother arrived at the meeting place, Savvy greeted her with a mix of feigned sorrow and fabricated tears. “I don’t know what to do anymore,” she said, her voice shaky as she recounted the supposed betrayal. “Harvey promised he’d be there for me, but he just left me alone in a foreign country. I couldn’t even reach him, and now he’s cut me off completely. I just don’t understand…”
But Harvey’s mother, though taken aback by the situation, was no fool. Her eyes narrowed, and something in her gut told her that Savvy‘ s story didn’t quite add up. She had always been suspicious of Savvy’s intentions, but now, seeing the desperation in her eyes, she knew it was

time for the truth to come to light.
“I think you need to hear the truth,” Harvey’s mother said coldly. “The truth that Savvy has been hiding for far too long.”
Nicolas, who had been watching from the corner, stepped forward. His tone was firm, resolute. “Savvy has been manipulating both of you. She’s been orchestrating all of this, trying to control everyone around her. You were never abandoned, Harvey didn’t abandon her. She made sure to push him away when it suited her.”
Harvey, too, joined in, his voice shaking with anger. “She lied to us, to everyone. I know now that everything was a game to her. Her entire story, everything she said, was all part of a twisted plan. I never left her, I didn’t abandon her–I just couldn’t see her for what she truly was until now.”
Savvy, stunned and speechless, stood

frozen, her earlier bravado fading into nothingness. Harvey’s mother’s face turned pale as the full scope of Savvy s manipulation became clear. The woman who had once trusted Savvy with open arms now felt betrayed.
“Savvy, how could you?” Harvey‘ s mother demanded, her voice laced with disbelief. “You used me, you used Harvey, and you even tried to ruin Sabrina’s life. All these lies, all these games… do you realize what you‘ ve done?”
Savvy opened her mouth to respond, but the words failed her. There was nothing left to say, nothing she could do to defend herself. She had lost.
Harvey’s mother turned away from Savvy, disappointment etched across her face. “I can’t believe I ever believed you. You‘ re nothing but a manipulator, and I’ll make sure no one else falls for your lies again.”
Turning to Sabrina’s mother, she took a deep breath. “I owe you an apology. I see

now how wrong I was, and I deeply regret not seeing the truth sooner. Savvy has caused so much pain, and I am so sorry for the role I played in allowing her to hurt your family.”
Sabrina’s mother, who had been quietly observing the exchange, didn’t respond immediately. She let the weight of the apology hang in the air, then, with a calm yet firm tone, she spoke. “I appreciate your apology. But my priority has always been and will always be my daughter s happiness. And Savvy’s actions–her manipulation–have shown me that you too allowed yourself to be deceived. It’s a hard truth, but it’s the truth.”
Harvey’s mother lowered her head, the shame of her mistake settling in. “I know,” she whispered. “I failed you both, and for that, I’m truly sorry.”
Sabrina’s mother nodded, acknowledging the apology, but her expression remained stoic. “I will accept your apology, but I

won’t forget what has happened. There’s no going back. I’ve seen enough to know where my loyalty lies. And that loyalty is with my daughter.”
The words were clear, decisive. Sabrina’s mother wasn’t going to tolerate any more deceit, not from anyone. She had seen the lengths Savvy had gone to manipulate those around her, and she wasn‘ t about to let her get away with it any longer. Her daughter’s happiness and well–being were all that mattered now.
Savvy, standing in the midst of the confrontation, could do nothing but watch
as the women she had tried so hard to
manipulate turned their backs on her. Harvey’s mother and Sabrina’s mother were no longer the allies she had once thought them to be. Their bond, forged in years of friendship, was stronger than any web Savvy could weave.
The realization hit Savvy harder than anything. She had lost. She had been so

consumed by her need for control, for power, that she had failed to see the loyalty that bound these women together. Their friendship, their shared history, was unbreakable. And no matter how hard she tried, no matter how many lies she told, she would never be able to sever that bond.
As Harvey’s mother walked away, Sabrina s mother turned to Nicolas who was looking pale white from
embarrassment and guilt. Her gaze softened just a bit, her voice gentle but resolute.
“We’re not done yet,” she said, placing a reassuring hand on Nicolas‘ shoulder.
“Savvy may have tried to tear us apart, but she’s failed. You‘ re stronger than she ever realized, just not with my daughter.”
As the two women walked away from the scene, Savvy stood alone, the walls she had so carefully constructed crumbling around her. And for the first time, she realized just how alone she truly was.
