Chapter 11
Floyd felt as if his heart had frozen in his chest. His body went numb, his mind unable to catch up.
The only thought racing through his head was: I have to catch her!
Instinct took over before his brain could process anything.
Floyd ran desperately toward the window below, reaching out in a frantic attempt to catch Lumina as she fell.
By some stroke of luck, he did manage to grab hold of her.
But the third floor was too high and Lumina’s descent too swift. Even though he caught her, it only slightly cushioned her fall, sparing her from hitting the ground directly and instead guiding her to land on the grass below.
The price he paid was devastating–both of

his arms were twisted into grotesque, unnatural positions.
Doctors from across the hospital rushed to the scene–some carrying stretchers, others administering first aid, while a few began CPR. Even Tracie, with no medical experience, hurried forward, desperate to help in any way she could.
But Sean, the hospital‘ s chief surgeon and most respected authority, stood motionless, too paralyzed with fear to act.
At this point, everyone at the hospital was accustomed to this.
Who didn’t know that Sean‘ s position. was bought with the Stuart Family’s wealth?
To ask him to save a life now was no different than telling him to commit murder in broad daylight.
A flood of medical staff worked quickly, rushing both Lumina and Floyd into the operating room.

Drew and Erika, upon hearing the news, immediately contacted the best doctors from back home for assistance.
The operating room lights blazed on for an agonizing forty–eight hours.
Doctors continued to rush in, taking over from one another, while bloodied gauze was constantly being sent out. Even Grandma Alice, who was still recovering in the hospital, was startled by the news and insisted on being wheeled to the door of the operating room.
She knew well that if she didn’t show up, Floyd might make it out alive, but Lumina’s fate was far less certain.
Despite everything that had happened, not one from the Shields Family showed
up- not even a word of sympathy, let alone any genuine concern from Drew and Erika.
Finally, in the early hours of the third day, Floyd was the first to be wheeled out. His vital signs were stable and his hands had

been saved, though they would never fully function as they once had.
Upon hearing this, Erika, perhaps overcome with emotion, fainted on the spot.
Grandma Alice quickly grabbed the doctor by the arm, her voice urgent. “How is Lumina? What about my Lumina?”
The doctor sighed, his voice heavy with grim news. “The situation isn’t looking good. The family should be prepared for the possibility that she may never wake up.”
Grandma Alice nearly collapsed in shock.
Two days later, Floyd finally regained
consciousness.
The first thing he did upon waking was ask the nurse by his side, his voice weak but urgent. “How’s Moony?”
The nurse hesitated, too afraid to speak.
The news had already spread throughout

the hospital–that Lumina had jumped from the third–floor window and Floyd had rushed up without hesitation to catch her. The nurse was terrified that if she spoke, the consequences could be unimaginable.
Floyd noticed the nurse’s struggle to speak and his heart clenched painfully in
his chest.
“Moony, my Moony!”
Even though both of his arms were in casts, Floyd summoned an incredible willpower to tear off his IV drip and stumble out of bed. He rushed down the hallway, determined to find her.
He searched room by room, but no matter where he looked, Lumina was nowhere to
be found.
His arm, strained from the effort, started to tear open at the IV site, blood flowing
freely and staining the bandages. The
blood dripped onto the floor, one drop, two drops, three drops…

By the time he reached the top floor, Floyd was pale, his vision blurry as if he might faint, but he clung desperately to the walls, unwilling to turn back.
And then, finally, in the ICU, he saw her.
Lumina was lying there, her body covered
in a maze of tubes and wires. She looked so
frail, it was almost impossible to see her
chest rise and fall.
