Chapter 232: Gemma Asks About Her Past
Gemmes waved a hand.
Thelped you last time because I’d already promised. I keep my word”
And besides, making medicine? That’s my thing
“But if you want me to smooth things over with the victims or say nice things to the cops about your family: sorry, that’s out of my league.”
Her meaning wax clear
As a friend, she could step in during a crisis.
But she wasn’t about to be an accomplice.
Brian had once been powerless, nearly crushed under the Read family’s boot
She’ll helped him then, no question.
But now? He had power. He was calling the shots. And people change.
She was starting to wonder
Maybe their paths didn’t align anymor
And it that was the case, why force it?
That’s just how people are, right?
Brian tried to explain.
“Gemma, you’ve got it all wrong,”
His voice was resigned but still as gentle as ever.
“I’m not trying to put you in a tough spot. It’s just.. your medical skills are solid. It something happens while I’m negotiating with the victims, I’d feel better knowing you’re there to help.”
Gemma waved him off again.
“You should apply for that through the police. It’s their jurisdiction, not mine.”
A flicker of disappointment crossed Brian’s eyes,
“Gemma, do you look down on me because my family has criminals in it?”
She shook her head without hesitation.
Honestly, she wasn’t in any position to look down on anyone.
“I just think… a crime is a crime. And people should face the consequences.”
“If you want to pull strings, that’s your business. I have nothing to say about it.”
“But I won’t help, because I can’t even begin to understand that kind of thinking.”
She kept her words tact tuk
Because they were still friends.
She just hoped he understood.
That he wouldn’t throw away everything he’d worked so hard to build… all for personal gain.
Brian fell silent.
When they arrived at the police station. Robin was already waiting at the entrance.
He was here to accompany Gemma to see Dan Kelestine.
Dan was a strange one. The truth was basically all pieced together now, but he still refused to say a word.
They needed his testimony to complete the case.
That’s why they’d asked Gemma to help.
One, because she had her own questions about her past. And two, because if anyone knew Dan’s weak spots, it was her.
“Brian, go take care of your business. Like I said in the car, I really can’t help with this.”
Gemma gave Robin a quick nod, then turned to Brian with an apologetic look.
Brian understood and didn’t push. Instead, he just smiled, nodded, and walked away.
Robin then led her toward the detention center.
“What’s my task?”
Gemma asked as they walked.

Robin chuckled.
“Knew I couldn’t keep it from you.”
He’d been stressing over how to bring it up, but now there was no need.
So, he laid everything out.
Gemma agreed.
T’ll try, but I don’t have a good relationship with him. No promises.”
“That’s fine.”
Robin reassured her.
“Just keep it casual, like a regular visit.”
Gemma took a deep breath.
It was her first time in a place like this.
Dan sat on the other side of the glass, wearing a prison uniform.
His hair was cropped short, making his face look even darker, his sharp eyes darting around.
When he saw her, he scowled, not even wanting to sit down.
The guard had to push him into the seat before he reluctantly picked up the phone.
Gemma’s voice came through the receiver.
“Rough time, huh? It’s only been three days, and you’ve already lost, what, six pounds?”
At that, Dan actually relaxed a little and plopped down in his chair.
“You little bitch! They didn’t arrest you? Fuck! Listen, get me out of here, or I swear I’ll kill you!”
“You? Kill me?” Gemma raised an eyebrow. “With what authority? You weren’t even my real father. What makes you think you can lay a finger on
me?”
Dan’s smirk vanished in an instant.
“You know?” His eyes narrowed. “No way. Who told you?”
Gemma studied his reaction. Yeah. He definitely knew more than her adoptive mother and Aunt Nancy.
“The village chief.”
She had originally gone to see the chief, but his crimes were too severe–he was in solitary confinement and off–limits for visits.
Dan didn’t know that.
He bought her words.
And that… made things much easier.
“The chief spilled everything,” she continued. “No point in playing dumb. When it’s your time, it’s your time.”
“Though, gotta say… the chief’s smarter than you. He ratted someone else out. Could be enough to avoid the death penalty.”
“Who knows? Maybe when they execute you, he’ll even be there to watch.”
Dan had been skeptical at first.
But that last line? That got him.
“You bitch! I’m not gonna die!”
“I’ve got connections. Tiger will protect me!”
Gemma’s eyes narrowed“Tiger?”
At that, Dan suddenly shut down, his expression going cold.
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Your birth mother killed his brother. He’ll never let you go, either.”
Gemma froze.
A realization hit her.
“So… back when I was a kid, all the abuse… that was on Tiger’s orders?”
Dan spat on the floor. “What abuse? That’s just how girls are raised! You think you were special?”
Then, as if suddenly remembering something, his expression twisted.
“I raised you, damn it! You owe me! I don’t care how you do it, get me out of here!”
Gemma’s mind was reeling, but she kept her face calm.
“You sure that’s the tone you wanna take with me?” She leaned in. “Don’t forget–I have Drogo.”
