Chapter 243: Bet You Didn’t See That Coming–Sis Is a Pro
Still, she made a show of tugging nervously at Ashton’s sleeve.
“Uncle Ash, if the Chavez family makes a move, we gotta back Ms. Kelestine up.”
Ashton had been on edge just moments ago.
But her little distraction actually helped him calm down.
His mind kicked back into gear.
Gemma had been way too arrogant lately, all thanks to Mr. Cassius’s support.
A run–in with the Chavez might just be the reality check she needed.
The Doltons couldn’t afford a reckless heiress running wild.
“Stay out of it.”
His voice was low but carried enough weight to shut things down.
Kaiya nodded immediately.
“Oh, so you’ve already got everything under control, Uncle Ash? Then I won’t worry.”
Ashton smirked coldly to himself.
Under control?
Even if the Chavez family weren’t involved today, he’d still make sure Gemma got a taste of the real world. She needed to understand just how good she had it with the Doltons.
This was just a happy coincidence.
His gaze met Jonathan’s.
A silent understanding passed between them.
Jonathan gave a slight nod.
Ashton’s lips curled into a subtle smile.
Then-
Juelz’s eyes turned red. “Ms. Kelestine, I believe you. I had my son checked at the best hospital in N.L. City. The diagnosis is the same–it’s Menkes
syndrome.”
Menkes syndrome?
Most people had never even heard of it.
Except for Shawn, who smacked his forehead and immediately spoke up.
“I know this one! There was a case online–some baby was diagnosed at six months, It’s a genetic disorder, and they said he wouldn’t live past three.”
“But then, the kid’s father developed a breakthrough treatment. He intervened at the genetic level, and the kid survived.”
There was a successful case right here in the country.
So why weren’t they looking for that father instead of coming to Gemma?
Because they didn’t actually need her.
They needed Cassius.
If Gemma took the case, Cassius wouldn’t sit back and do nothing.
That original histidine copper treatment had long since been upgraded.
And the genetic procedure?
Only the elite doctors at Cassius’s high–end lab could pull it off.
And even then, there were no guarantees.
The success rate depended on the patient’s condition.
If Gemma got involved, she was stepping into a minefield.
Shawn couldn’t help but glance at Cassius, trying to read his reaction.
Cassius was as unshakable as ever.
He sat there, steady as a rock, waiting for Gemma’s decision.
Shawn shot him a look, trying to signal something.
Cassius lifted his gaze, meeting Shawn’s eyes with an expression that said—
Relax, I know what I’m doing.

Shawn, “…”
Three’s a crowd.
Gemma, oblivious to Shawn’s silent struggle, refocused on the child, examining him carefully.
“I can try, but I won’t promise a cure.”
Juelz’s eyes grew even redder, overflowing with gratitude.
“Dr. Kelestine, whatever you need, just say the word. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Gemma took a deep breath and gently lifted the child.
“First, he needs to be hospitalized. I have to stabilize his condition before anything else.”
“Of course! Absolutely!” Juelz nodded frantically. “Dr. Kelestine, don’t feel pressured. Just do your best. As for the outcome…..”
He was a grown man, but even he choked up, struggling to hold back tears.
‘I’m prepared for the worst.”
Gemma patted his shoulder lightly.
“Hope is everything.”
Good thing she had done some reading during her pregnancy. When she was feeling down, she buried herself in foreign medical research.
She
She wasn’t exactly an expert, but she was familiar enough with the subject.
Next, she’d need a sterile lab to formulate a specialized treatment for this kid.
That wouldn’t be a problem for the Chavez family.
“Let’s get to the hospital.”
There was no time to waste.
Aside from the genetic condition, the child was already severely weakened. He needed immediate medical intervention to stabilize him before anything else.
“Yes, yes, whatever the doctor says!”
Mr. Chavez wiped his tears and carefully cradled the child before hurrying out.
At the door, the Doltons was still watching.
When they saw the Chavezs hanging on Gemma’s every word, their expressions turned to sheer disbelief.
Jonathan frowned.
“Why isn’t going to a specialist, Mr. Chavez? No offense, but I know plenty of experts I can introduce you to.”
Because of Jonathan’s Gemma’s grandfather, Mr. Chavez had to remain polite.
“Are you worried your granddaughter will be overworked? Don’t worry. Our family will fully cooperate with Ms. Kelestine’s treatment. We won’t make things difficult for her.”
Jonathan, “…”
That wasn’t what he meant.
“You misunderstand,” he said, awkwardly trying to explain.
Ashton quickly chimed in. e’re just concerned that Gemma might be causing trouble here.”
Mr. Chavez was desperate, but he wasn’t a fool.
Now, he finally sensed something was off.
“I have a simple rule–I don’t second–guess the people I trust.”
“So, since I’ve chosen Ms. Kelestine, I’ll accept whatever outcome comes of it.”
“As for you lot-”
“I seriously suspect you’re just wasting my time. If your nonsense interferes with my grandson’s treatment, I swear on my old bones, I’ll drag you all
down with me!”
The weight of his words hit like a hammer.
Jonathan, for all his power, wasn’t about to go toe–to–toe with a man this desperate.
Ashton immediately stepped in, forcing a smile and signaling for the Dolton family to step aside.
Once the Chavez family left.
They finally let out a collective breath.
“That girl holds a grudge,” Madeline muttered, clearly annoyed. “She walked right past me and didn’t even say ‘Grandmother.”
Kaiya’s internal alarms blared.
Madeline had never wanted to acknowledge Gemma before.

Now she was suddenly concerned about their relationship?
Jonathan saw through it immediately.
“It’s better this way. If she really gets close to the Chavez family, our blood ties will ensure they won’t turn against us.”
“And if she makes enemies over this child, we’ll have an excuse to get away with it.”
“Ashton,” Jonathan paused, then added, “keep an eye on Gemma. If anything happens, tell me immediately.”
Ashton raised a brow.
“Dad, are you saying we’re settling in N.L City for good?”
Jonathan nodded. “That’s right. Our main goal here is securing the Chavez family’s support.”
“We can’t leave empty–handed.”
Kaiya perked up. “Oh! My bestie Yvonne has ties with the Chavez family. I can ask her to dig around.”
Jonathan’s expression brightened. “Good thinking. You always know what to do.”
