Chapter 244: The Ex–Husband Finally Gets It, But It’s Too Late
On the Road.
Shawn was driving, but when the light turned red, he couldn’t help glancing back.
‘Gem, can you really cure that kid?”
To be honest, the kid’s condition looked so bad it made his head spin.
Logically speaking, he should’ve told Gemma to stay out of it.
It wasn’t her responsibility. She was a surgeon with some pharmacology knowledge, sure, and even though she later worked in cardiology and the Integrated Medicine Department, that was just part of the hospital’s rotation system.
She had every reason to turn down the Chavez family’s request.
Before Gemma could respond, Cassius spoke first.
“If she were that kind of person, you’d be dead by now.”
Shawn, “…”
He instantly shut up.
Back then, he’d been hanging by a thread. No one knew what to do.
If Gemma hadn’t pulled off a miracle and used a specialized drug to keep him alive, he wouldn’t have made it off that operating table.
Now, he got why she wanted to help the kid.
“I can’t guarantee a full recovery, but I want to try.”
“That’s why I need a favor from Mr. Smith.”
Shawn, “???”
He was a little creeped out. “Why’d you suddenly call me Mr. Smith? Feels like something bad’s about to happen.”
Gemma laughed. “Relax, I’m not setting you up. I just need you to find the kid’s father–the one who made that special drug.”
“I actually tried to recreate it when I was pregnant, but I never tested it, so it’s not safe to use.”
“But his formula was made for his son–it’s safe for humans.”
Shawn dropped the playful attitude, his expression turning serious.
“Even if you didn’t ask, I’d still help. The more hands on deck, the better.”
He paused, then let out a sigh.
“Damn, you really managed to make it? That’s insane. Gem, how’d you do it? Teach me!”
The idea of being a legendary doctor, sought after by everyone, sounded amazing.
Gemma: “…It’s just a matter of reviewing the literature and organizing the data.”
She didn’t think it was that hard.
If she’d had access to a sterile lab back then, her version might’ve even been ready for market.
Shawn, “…”
So this was the difference between normal people and geniuses?
As they neared the hospital, Gemma finally looked at Cassius, hesitating.
‘Cassius, will taking on this patient cause any trouble for you?”
As a doctor, her priority was whether she could treat the patient.
Nothing else mattered.
But now, she suddenly realized–the Chavez family wasn’t just any patient. Cassius wanted to work with them.
If she succeeded, they’d owe Cassius a favor. The partnership would be sealed.
But if she failed?
Given how much the Chavez farnily valued their child, failure might turn them into enemies.
Cassius rolled down the window slightly.
A cool breeze drifted in, instantly clearing his mind.
His voice carried on the wind, reaching her ears.
“Doesn’t matter. Even if this doesn’t work out, I have other ways to handle it. You don’t need to worry about that.”
Shawn burst out laughing.

‘Gem, you really don’t need to overthink this. When Cassius makes a move, he always has backup plans.”
“Just focus on your patient–leave the scheming to him.”
Gemma felt a weight lift off her chest. “Good.”
Cassius glanced at her, seeing how tense she’d been.
His lips curled up slightly.
The night breeze was cool, but warmth spread through his chest.
As soon as Gemma arrived, she started the admission process.
This was the first inpatient case since the Integrated Medicine Department was established—and it was already a high–profile one.
When the hospital director heard about it, he personally came down, looking deeply concerned.
“Dr. Kelestine, I’ve called in specialists for support. We’ll do everything we can.”
If they succeeded, their research could continue with official backing.
The director had brought in top experts in this field.
Gemma nodded. “Thank you, sir. Your leadership is a blessing to us all.”
The director chuckled, looking a little shy.
“Just do your best. If you run into any problems, let me know.”
“Will do. No worries.”
She smiled and was immediately pulled into a meeting to review the latest research.
The director had planned to sit in, but his assistant rushed over.
“Director, Wilsons Group just donated a batch of medical equipment. It’s already arrived, but they’re insisting that Dr. Kelestine sign for it personally.”
The director, “???”
That didn’t make sense.
Even for donations, the vice director or finance department usually handled the paperwork. They’d verify everything, process it into inventory, and then send Wilsons Group a formal thank–you letter.
Why demand Gemma specifically?
“Dr. Kelestine is busy,” the director said, frowning. Wilsons Group is being unreasonable. “I’ll go check it.”
“It won’t work,” assistant said bitterly. “I already offered to sign, but they wouldn’t budge. They said if Gemma doesn’t come down, they’ll take the equipment back.”
The director, “…”
Advanced medical equipment was expensive.
Keeping up with the latest technology was a constant financial strain on the hospital.
Now, Marcus had handed them a solution–on one condition.
Technically, it was a small request. He should say yes.
But..
He glanced at Gemma, who was buried in work, and sighed. “I’ll go check it out first. If it really has to be her, we’ll figure something out.”
‘Got it.”
The assistant wasn’t surprised. After all, everyone knew Dr. Kelestine was under Cassius’s protection. Of course the director would tread carefully.
Gemma finished compiling all the medical data, printed out copies, and distributed them. The last document detailed the child’s condition and treatment history.
“Thanks for your hard work, everyone.”
The team immediately dove into their research.
Gemma finally took a breath. Just then, her phone buzzed. It was Elizabeth.
[Kiddo, I’m out of the hospital. You promised–you’re coming over!]
After the whole mess with Keagan, the Beasleys had nearly collapsed. Their feud with Susie’s family only made things worse.
If not for Cassius’s influence keeping their business partners from cutting them off completely, they would’ve been swallowed whole.
Now, at least, they’d stabilized their stocks.
Gemma checked her schedule.

[I should be free in three days.]
Elizabeth responded instantly.
[Great! I’ll be waiting.]
Gemma put her phone away and was about to check on her patient when she overheard some nurses talking.
“I can’t believe the donation is specifically for Dr. Kelestine. Why isn’t she going to sign for it?”
“That’s top–tier equipment. We couldn’t even buy this if we wanted to.”
Gemma walked over, genuinely puzzled. “Wait–what exactly got donated to me?”
