Chapter 261: Just Messing with You, Only Fools Would Sit Around and Wait
The medical equipment was back to normal.
Everyone had entered the final calibration phase.
The ambulance carrying the patient was just ten minutes away.
Gemma quickly changed into her surgical gown, sterilized the operating room, and began prepping for surgery.
Ten minutes later.
The patient arrived at the hospital and underwent a series of urgent tests.
Since this surgery was a matter of life and death–not just for the child but for the hospital itself–all tests were expedited through the fast–track
system.
About thirty minutes later, the results came in.
The child had taken histidine copper, and his body was now stable enough for surgery.
The director’s eyes brimmed with tears.
“Dr. Kelestine, from here on, it’s all in your hands!”
Gemma turned to the team of specialists behind her.
“It’s not just me—this is a team effort.”
The director caught on immediately and quickly made his rounds, shaking hands and offering words of encouragement to boost morale.
Once the formalities were out of the way, he practically teleported back to Gemma’s side.
“Dr. Kelestine, don’t worry about anything outside–I’ve got it all covered.”
Gemma lowered her voice.
“I also called the police. We just need to hold on until they arrive.”
The director flashed an “OK” sign. “Leave it to me.”
Gemma wasted no time. She pulled on her surgical mask and assigned everyone their roles.
The patient was swiftly wheeled into the OR.
As the surgical lights flicked on, the room fell into complete focus.
A dedicated team recorded every moment-
If the surgery succeeded, it would become a groundbreaking case study.
If it failed, they’d analyze every detail to understand why.
Kaiya’s hospital room.
With the two visitors gone, only Ashton remained.
The soft blue glow of his laptop screen reflected off his face.
Lines of code scrolled endlessly before his eyes.
His lips curled into a slow smirk.
“The kid’s here.”
He had already hacked into the hospital’s security system, watching as the Chavez family’s child was taken out of the ambulance.
“What a hassle…”
He saw the kid being rushed off for bloodwork and an ultrasound.
Hospitals. He knew how these things worked.
At minimum, this whole process would take two hours.
Annoyed, he slammed his fist onto the table.
Just then-
His phone rang.
One glance at the caller ID, and his frustration disappeared.
Taking a deep breath, he walked to the window, cracked it open, and stared down at the bustling streets below.
“Just landed? Mm. Go to the place I arranged for you.”
“Relax Haven’t I always kept you safe all these years?”

“This time’s no different. You and the kid will be fine.”
“Stop worrying about me. There’s not a soul alive who can touch me.”
“Mm. Go on. Take care of yourself.”
“Let the nanny handle the kid—just get some real sleep.”
“It’s not that I don’t love the kid. I just love you more.”
His voice was gentle, like it had been dipped in melted marshmallows.
When he hung up, the smile lingered on his lips.
His mood had completely shifted.
The call confirmed that the kid’s condition was stable. That meant he had plenty of time to play this game with Gemma.
If she had played along, the Doltons wouldn’t have minded taking in another heiress.
But Gemma was stubborn, forcing his hand.
Once this was over, he’d teach her a lesson-
Make her understand the difference between being a Dolton and being just some ordinary doctor.
He turned back to his laptop. The Chavez kid had finished all the tests and was back in his hospital room, waiting for results.
Switching the feed, he pulled up a live view of the Integrated Medicine Department.
There was Gemma, pacing anxiously in a patient’s room.
He unmuted the audio and leaned back, listening.
“What do we do? The surgical equipment is down! I can’t perform surgery with no equipment!”
The hospital director let out a heavy sigh.
“Our firewall is one of the best… I never expected a hacker to actually take it down.”
“Director, think of something!” Gemma was on the verge of tears. “The whole world knows about this surgery! If we don’t do it, what happens to the hospital’s reputation?”
The director rubbed his temples. “I get it! I want to fix this too, but I just don’t have the ability!”
“The hackers I hired are working on it. Just give them a little more time.”
Gemma clenched her fists and slammed the wall.
“Director, we’re running out of time!”
Hearing this, a cold glint flashed in Ashton’s eyes.
He had given Gemma plenty of hints, yet she still refused to beg him.
Fine.
Great!
Let’s see how long that arrogance lasts.
The conversation continued in his earpiece, but Ashton closed his eyes, counting down the seconds in his head.
“Any updates from the hackers?”
“Whoever’s behind this is too skilled. We can’t track them down, and even repairing the firewall is proving impossible.”
Gemma’s voice wavered.
“We’re out of time… Looks like I have no choice but to give in.”
The director perked up.
“What do you mean?”
“Maybe… I know how to fix this.”
The director’s eyes lit up. “Really? Dr. Kelestine, if you can pull this off, you’ll be the hospital’s savior!”
Ashton let out a quiet chuckle.
He had set this whole trap, and somehow, Gemma was turning it into her own opportunity.
No matter.
Once his kid was stable, he’d sit down with the director and have a serious talk about Dr. Kelestine.
With that thought, his mood lifted.
He wasn’t even interested in listening to the rest of the conversation. He leaned back, closing off the hospital feed, and simply waited for Gemma to
come to him
But even with his earpiece out, the noise outside wouldn’t stop.

“What do we do? The computers are down!”
“The medical orders are all messed up!”
“I haven’t even given this patient their injection yet!”
“Someone call the head doctor–this patient’s crashing!”
Irritated, Ashton grabbed a pair of noise–canceling headphones and put them on.
Inside the OR.
Gemma completed the final procedure.
A collective sigh of relief swept through the team. Then–applause erupted.
“We did it!”
“The kid has a real shot now!”
“This gene surgery is revolutionary–I’m witnessing history in the making!”
“No, we are the witnesses! We just pushed the limits of modern medicine!”
“Dr. Kelestine is an inspiration to us all!”
“Dr. Kelestine!”
“Dr. Kelestine!”
“Dr. Kelestine!”
Gemma stared at the monitors–all readings were stable.
She exhaled slowly. She had really done it.
The intensity of the surgery had drained her. Now that the tension had lifted, her legs nearly gave out.
A nearby nurse quickly reached out to steady her.
“Dr. Kelestine, are you alright?”
The nurse handed her a clean cloth, gently dabbing away the tears at the corners of her eyes.
