Chapter 275: Every Devil Has Their Own Agenda
The nurse followed protocol, double–checking the baby’s ID tag, wristband, and all necessary documents.
Every verification required Christine’s signature.
This wasn’t just a formality–it was legally binding.
If there was any mix–up with the baby, Christine would be held responsible.
She let out a slow breath as she signed, feeling a bit of the tension ease from her shoulders.
At last, everything was settled.
She watched as the hospital bed was wheeled into the operating room, and only then did last night’s events start playing in her mind again.
Jarrett hadn’t been able to stop Gemma.
But Ashton had bribed a few people–enough to help him take the baby.
They had even prepared a swap in advance, rushing her to change the baby’s clothes and ID tag.
Ashton was outside, handling the arrangements with his contact.
Inside, Christine was supposed to do the switch.
But in reality…
She didn’t change a thing.
When the time came, Ashton stepped into the hospital room, ready to take the baby he had brought.
Just to be safe, she started crying and begged to see the baby one last time.
The infant was wrapped up so tightly she could barely see his face.
But she still held him and wept for a full minute.
Then, in a hushed voice, she asked.
“Ashton, are you sure this doctor is reliable?”
Ashton’s expression was serious.
“Of course. This is the same doctor who operated alongside Gemma before. And come on, Gemma’s young–you really think she was the lead surgeon?”
“You know how the world works.”
“Gemma’s got Mr. Cassius backing her. Who wouldn’t want to stay on his good side?”
Christine finally let go of the baby.
“Ashton, I believe you. I know you truly care about him…. that you really want a good life for us.”
“Please, take good care of him.”
Ashton nodded, his gaze full of emotion.
“This child is proof of our love. I’d give my life to protect him.”
Christine wiped her tears.
“I know. Now, go.”
Ashton glanced at the baby lying in the hospital bed.
“This one has the same condition. If anything, our son’s situation is giving him a shot at treatment.”
“If the surgery is successful, I’ll cover all the recovery costs too. Don’t worry–the kid’s parents have already agreed to it.”
Christine nodded. “Okay, I’ll leave it to you.”
Ashton left with the baby.
Everything had gone smoothly–almost too smoothly.
It really made her question how secure this hospital actually was.
The moment Ashton was gone, Christine sent a message.
She had just set up this phone number.
It wasn’t registered under her name.
But it was useful for dealing with certain complications.
The message was for Kaiya.
She had already used this number to reach out to Kaiya before, which had been enough to earn her trust.

Now that this message was sent, Kaiya probably wouldn’t be getting much sleep tonight.
And sure enough, Kaiya wasn’t sleeping well.
Not just because of the message.
But also because of Abigail’s phone call.
Yvonne had warned her before, which was why she had asked her mother to investigate.
Abigail had been in the game for years.
And she dug deep.
What she found was shocking.
First, Ashton wasn’t just some reckless playboy–he was a lot darker than he seemed.
Everyone thought he and Christine had been forced apart back then. But in reality, Christine had played the long game.
She married a man who was doomed to die young, Became a widow. And just like that, no one paid attention to her anymore.
That was how she and Ashton had been able to stay together for years–undetected.
If it weren’t for Christine’s child falling ill and forcing her to rush to N.L. City, leaving loose ends in S City, they might never have been caught.
Kaiya was stunned. “So… I’m not even the rightful heir to the Doltons family anymore?”
Abigail sighed.
“I was adopted late. I was never officially added to the Doltons‘ family register.”
“All these years, no matter how hard I worked, I could never get in.”
“And now I know why–Ashton was blocking me the whole time.”
Kaiya felt like the ground had just been ripped out from under her.
She used to be the only heir of her generation.
Now, suddenly, there was Gemma.
Fine, she thought. Some country bumpkin? I can deal with her.
She had plenty of ways to make Gemma back off–or even disappear.
But now there was another one.
A boy.
In S City, sons mattered a lot more than daughters.
With this child in the picture, the Doltons elders might decide to redistribute the inheritance.
Her share would shrink.
And her uncles‘ assets? Those would be divided up, too.
Uncle Ash had always seemed to favor her.
But she wasn’t his biological daughter.
If it came down to his real son or her she didn’t stand a chance.
If she didn’t fight for her place now, all her years of effort would go to waste.
Abigail kept it simple.
‘For now, luck is still on our side.”
“That kid has a serious condition. No one even knows if he’ll survive the surgery.”
“Surgery is risky. And if something were to go wrong. If the odds shift against him, and the operation fails.”
Kaiya got the message loud and clear.
They weren’t just playing defeme. They were going for the kill.
With or without this child, the stakes were completely different.
“Mom. I’ll handle it.”
Abigail sighed. “Don’t be too hasty. Keep watching. I doubt your Uncle Ash is just going to let Gemma operate so easily.”
Kaiya immediately started digging
This time, she even enlisted Yvonne’s help.
Yvonne was a solid ally–she sent over plenty of resources.
And the results came fast.
Ashton was planning to switch the babies. His goal? To sabotage Gemina, cause a medical disaster, and sneak his son into the clear,

Kaiya shivered.
If she acted against Gemma now, she’d be playing right into Ashton’s hands. She’d take the fall, get kicked out of the Doltons family…
And meanwhile, the kid would be free and clear.
It was a win–win for Ashton.
She called Abigail again.
Abigail wasn’t the least bit surprised.
“That’s just who your Uncle Ash is. Find the real baby. I’m already on my way to N.L. City–I’ll be there by morning. You do what you need to do. If anything goes wrong, I’ll handle it.”
“Mom, don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.”
After hanging up, Kaiya pulled up the files on the surgeon performing the operation.
On paper, the guy was top–tier. Even had experience with genetic procedures.
But he had one fatal flaw–gambling.
He was drowning in debt.
That was how Ashton had him under his thumb.
Well, that meant she could control him too.
With that in mind, she changed clothes, grabbed her keys, and headed out. Time to have a little chat with the good doctor.
