Chapter 45: Uncle Cassius Sacrificed Me to See Gemma
Lindsay was originally hired as a backup when the hospital’s first pick chose a better offer.
Once she joined, she worked hard, always asking questions, and Gemma patiently answered.
But later, Lindsay went too far–she wanted access to the core data of Gemma’s thesis.
That was crossing a line. Sharing it would be like handing over her work on a silver platter.
So, Gemma firmly refused.
Who knew Lindsay would hold a grudge and fall for Mabel’s manipulations?
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!”
Lindsay sobbed, full of regret.
“If I’d just focused on my work, I could’ve earned a lead surgeon role someday…”
Gemma waved her off, not in the mood for excuses. “You were supposed to report to the branch hospital today. Why didn’t you?”
Lindsay hesitated before continuing.
“When I found out you were Mr. Gray’s lead surgeon, I admitted you’re better than me. I was going to pack my staff at home before reporting to the branch.”
“But when I left the hospital, I ran into Ms. Johnson…”
She didn’t need to say more.
Gemma understood.
After a long silence, Lindsay broke down again.
“Dr. Kelestine, could you prescribe me some painkillers?”
Gemma smiled faintly. “You don’t meet the criteria for that yet
Lindsay paled further.
As a doctor, she knew pain management often came down to the attending physician’s discretion.
Her condition wasn’t life–threatening, just agonizing enough to make her wish it were.
Her tears flowed harder, this time with genuine anguish.
But Gemma’s warm smile remained. “Wishing you a speedy recovery.”
Lindsay was stunned.
She wanted to curse her but lacked the strength.
Later, Gemma adjusted Lindsay’s medication
Because Lindsay was weak, she switched to milder drugs.
This would drag the recovery but was better for her long–term health.
The downside?
A longer recovery and daily bouts of excruciating pain.
Gemma’s phone buzzed with a new message.
It was a photo message.
A book

It was her first medical textbook, a gift from her mentor.
This book was priceless to her.
Chapter 44 Uncle Cassius Sacrificed Me to See Gemma
A new message came in-
“I changed my mind. Come back today, or I’ll burn this book.”
That tone who else but Marcus, the ex she despised?
Furious, Gemma nearly hurled her phone.
But years of dealing with his erratic behavior had taught her to stay calm.
After a deep breath, she texted back:
“Fine, I’ll come get it.”
Marcus replied immediately:
You’ve got 30 minutes.”
Gemma clenched her phone, took another deep breath, and composed herself. She asked for leave first.
Then, hesitated, she dialed Cassius’s number–one she’d saved abroad, thinking she’d never use.
But now…
The call connected quickly.
Cassius’s voice, calm and cold, carried an intimidating weight.

“What is it?”
No reply… He asked again.
She explained everything in one go.
“Mr. Cassius, you once promised me a favor. I’d like to cash it in.”
“Go on.”
His tone shifted slightly.
Gemma didn’t care to notice that.

Cassius’s voice returned to its usual icy tone, and he hung up without asking why.
Gemma, frazzled, didn’t notice his possible annoyance.
She only thought Cassius was remarkably accommodating. He didn’t ask why and just lent her a hand like that. Having a friend like him was truly a blessing.
Back at Cassius’s estate, the air turned icy.
Tommy instinctively shielded his family.
Even Noah, who was playing with Candy, shivered and glanced at the couch.
There sat Uncle Cassius, his expression as frigid as an ice sculpture.
Noah hugged Tonimy’s leg, whispering to himself; “He can’t see me, he can’t see me.……..
Luckily, Cassius didn’t explode this time, staying eerily silent.
Curious, Noah sneaked to the opposite couch and asked,
“Uncle Cassius, did you get dumped?”
He’d learned the word at preschool.
When his classmates said their dads were heartbroken, they acted just like this–cold and scary.
Cassius shot him a chilling look, and Noah immediately cowered.

“He shouldn’t have asked that!” screamed Noah inwardly.
Thankfully, Brooke entered to report.
Noah took the opportunity to bolt.
“Mr. Cassius, I’ve chosen the five best fighters. I’ve instructed them to follow Ms. Kelestine’s orders.”
The recent hospital hack had made Brooke realize how exceptional Gemma was.
He handled her requests with extra care.
Cassius waved him off but didn’t respond.
Brooke hesitated.
“Could her safety be at risk?
That hacker was linked to the Wolf Organization–they might retaliate.
Should you check on her personally?”
Cassius ignored him, picking up a children’s book instead.
He motioned for Noah to come back.
Noah, still eavesdropping, froze.
“Today’s story time. Which one?”
Brooke was stunned, and then instantly brought the children’s stool for Noah.
Noah sighed and sat down. Here we go. It’s the everyday torture time.
“Sleeping Beauty, I guess.”

A few minutes later, the story came to the ending part.
“The prince found the princess, reached out… Cassius looked at Noah, continued, “and tore her in half before devouring
her.”
Noah’s face froze.
The next second, his eyes brimmed with tears, and he burst into loud, heart–wrenching sobs.
Cassius remained unfazed, showing no intention of comforting him.
Noah’s wails only grew louder, practically shaking the walls
