Gemma cast a suspicious glance at Noah.
Noah immediately pulled a pitiful face.
He clung to her neck tightly.
Her heart softened.
Forget it. He’s just asking for a hug–what harm could he possibly mean?
She turned toward Cassius.
“Mr. Cassius, sorry you had to witness that.”
She’d thought marrying Marcus was the best thing in the world.
Now, she felt humiliated that Marcus was still her husband in name.
“I thought borrowing people from you would’ve cleared the slate between us. But now, I owe you another favor.”
Cassius remained expressionless.
“Punishing men who bully women is justice, not a debt of gratitude.”
His serious tone made Gemma chuckle.
“That’s not what I meant. I was talking about this…” She glanced at the study door. “My things are in the study, but there’s a passcode lock”
Time for the hacking expert, Mr. Cassius, to shine.

Five minutes later, they were in the study.
Gemma quickly packed her belongings and asked the bodyguards to carry them out.
Still, she couldn’t resist asking, “Where’s Marcus?”
The bodyguards looked to Cassius.
Cassius, sitting on a leather armchair, was as unruffled as his immaculately pressed black trousers. His face betrayed no emotion.
“Still alive.”
Well… Only someone like Cassius could measure actions in terms of life and death so casually.
After a brief pause, she rephrased her question.
“What I mean is, if you’re going to deal with him, do it thoroughly. Otherwise, he’ll think I till–have feelings for him.” She wasn’t exaggerating.
Judging by Marcus’s earlier behavior, he’d probably enjoy the attention
Cassius raised an eyebrow.
His attitude softened a little.
“Alright, as you wish.”
The bodyguard nodded in understanding.
“Don’t worry, Dr. Kelestine. We’ve handed him over to Tommy. He and his brothers are keeping Mr. Wilson company.”
His tone was respectful, though his words dripped with sarcasm,
To reinforce his point, the bodyguard opened a window.
From below, screams echoed incessantly.
Gemma pursed her lips in distaste.
Her remark drew a faint smile from Cassius.

The bodyguards, having finished their task, carried out the last of the items.
For the first time, Cassius asked about something personal “Do you have anything else to take?”
Noah surveyed the study’s decor with undisguised disdain.
Noah yelled, “This place is so shabby! Gemma, what kind of miserable life were you living here?”
“These useless things aren’t worth keeping. I’ll buy you all new ones later!”

“I don’t need anything else. This place is my past. I don’t want to linger.
Noah clapped his hands in delight.
“Great! Uncle Cassius, we can buy lots and lots of stuff for Gemma!”
“No need, no need,” Gemma quickly cut in.
“I have everything I need in my apartment.”
She knew the dynamic between Cassius and Noah too well. Though they pretended to be at odds, Cassius was a softie for his nephew, and Noah worshiped his uncle.
Their mutual affection was evident, even if neither admitted it.
If Noah made a suggestion, Cassius would act on it without hesitation
That thought was a bit terrifying.
Cassius nodded. “If that’s settled, let’s leave this wretched place.”
Gemma agreed wholeheartedly, holding Noah as they left.
Once they got into the car, Noah started complaining of a stomachache.
She couldn’t just suggest going to her place, so she focused on massaging his belly, “How does that feel now?”
After diagnosing Noah with mild bloating, she applied her special massage technique. The little boy’s face regained its color, and he snuggled comfortably against her.
Soon, he was fast asleep.
The car became eerily quiet.
Cassius opened a drawer beside him and handed her a tube of ointment.
Gemma hesitated, then checked the rearview mirror.
That’s when she noticed a bruise on her face.
No wonder the little angel had cried when he saw her.
She looked awful.
She scanned the ointment’s ingredients. It seemed safe.
Without hesitation, she dabbed it onto her face.
Its coolness soothed her bruised skin.
Not bad.
Once she finished, she returned the ointment and leaned back in her seat.
Her mind swirled with the events of the day, dragging her mood down.
A man she once cherished had shown his true, despicable nature.
Six years of devotion had become a colossal joke.
In the end, it seemed she’d only managed to move herself.

“He’s been wanting to thank you in person.”
Gemma snapped out of her thoughts and smiled faintly.
“That’s my duty as a doctor. Im just happy he’s recovering. Knowing he’s doing better gives me peace of mind.”
“As for gratitude, there’s no need. I don’t save lives for a ‘thank you.”
Cassius gazed out the window.
The scenery flew by, blurring into nothingness.
“You have clarity.
But you didn’t separate your emotions from your work.”
“Some people are like failed surgeries.
You do your best, but sometimes, you have to accept the outcome.”

Taking a deep breath, she let the faint scent of wood in the car calm her.
“Thank you, Mr. Cassius. I feel much better now.
Cassius glanced at the sleeping child on her lap, then back at her serene profile.
“You’ve done Noah a great kindness. Don’t call me ‘Mr. Cassius. It wouldn’t be equal.”
“I only said that because…”
“No need,” he interrupted, waving off her words.
“I always keep my promises. Don’t worry about it.”
“Then what should I call you?”
“Uncle Cassius? Wouldn’t that sound too forward, like I’m trying to get close to you?” joked Gemma.
Cassius didn’t respond.
Gemma felt a little bit awkward.
“How about I follow Mr. Smith’s lead and call you. Cass?”
