Chapter 49: Alijah’s Regret, Realizing He Wronged Gemma
Just as the words left her mouth, Gemma regretted them.
After all, she and Cassius weren’t that close.
Addressing him like that felt overly familiar and inappropriate.
She quickly waved her hand.
“Oh, I was just joking. I’m more comfortable calling you Mr. Cassius.”
She smiled awkwardly.
Cassius, however, clearly wasn’t pleased with her answer.
After a brief pause, he spoke up.
“You can call me by my name.”
This time, it was Gemma’s turn to be shocked.
Was he serious?
“Cas… Cassius?”
Cassius nodded. “Yes.”
Gemma froze.
Was this some kind of strange hallucination?
“Um, I… I mean…”
She scratched her head, feeling flustered.
Forget it.
It was just a name–no need to overthink.
“Gemma,” Cassius called her name softly, his tone calm, like an old friend speaking.
Her heart skipped a beat.
“Huh?” she responded, startled.
Seeing her flustered reaction, Cassius’s lips curved slightly, as if recalling something amusing.
“Shawn Smith will return to the country in a few days. He’ll need you for a follow–up examination.”
“Oh, okay…” Gemma snapped out of it. “He can come directly to the hospital to find me.”
Her words tumbled out as she nervously avoided his gaze.
Her flushed cheeks gave her away.
She looked… adorable.
Cassius’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed.
Just as he was about to speak, Noah burst in, holding Candy.
“Gemma, hurry! The bathwater is ready!”
Gemma quickly ran over, scooping up the puppy. “Tll handle her bath.”
Thelp with the shampoo!” Noah trotted behind her
eagerly.
Gemma stroked Candy’s fluffy head. “Alright, teamwork it is.”
Noah clapped his hands excitedly.
This was his first time teaming up with Gemma.
He was determined to do a great job.

Meanwhile, Marcus was hospitalized after his beating.
Mabel rushed to his side as soon as she heard the news.
At the same time, Alijah, who was supposed to be discharged, was stuck because no one came to handle the paperwork. Frustrated, Alijah argued with the nurse, but she explained she wasn’t authorized to make the decision.
Alijah, once restrained by Gemma’s presence, now acted out without limits.

He shoved the nurse aside and tried to run.
He knew the bodyguards would follow him and he’s not worried about getting lost.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get far before the bodyguards caught him.
Still defiant, he started crying loudly.
The bodyguard had to explain the situation.
“Master Alijah. Mr. Wilson is injured and undergoing treatment. He can’t come to discharge you right now.”
Alijah froze, his tears momentarily forgotten.
“My dad’s hurt?” he asked, frowning
“So what? I’m more important! I want to be discharged!”
The bodyguard’s face darkened as he wondered how a child could be so unreasonable.
“Sorry, but your father is not available now.
“Is he hurt worse than Mom was when she had her accident?” Alijah demanded.
The bodyguard hesitated, then replied,
“Not as severe.
It’s mostly superficial injuries, but they’re spread across his body.
He needed bed rest.
Alijah scowled.
“When Mom was in a car accident, she still came to the hospital to take care of me. Dad’s useless!” He stomped his foot. “Mom is better. I’ll go fi
find her and have her discharge mel
Alijah’s memory flashed back to when he was four and battling Kawasaki disease. His neck was swollen, and he needed a heart monitor.
Gemma, despite being exhausted, stayed by his side.
Because of her sleepless nights, she was hit by a car while in a daze.
Her wrist was fractured, but she delayed treatment to be with him during his immunoglobulin infusion
Even now, when his dad failed him, his instinct was to turn to his mom.
Back then, he saw Gemma’s face turn pale with pain and cold sweats pouring down her face, but he never thought of calling his father.
It seemed that all this should be done by the mother.
“Please, you’ll just need to stay at the hospital for two more days”
The bodyguard remained unimpressed by Alijah’s tantrum, dismissing his demands as childish nonsense.
“Please don’t make things difficult for us, young master,”
This time, Alijah stayed quiet.
He had noticed a mother and daughter passing by the room.
The little girl, pale and with an IV line in her hand, swayed as she walked, clearly feverish.
Her mother bent down, offering. “Sweetie, let me carry you.”
The girl shook her head. “Mom, you’re already so tired. I can walk on my own.”

“But you’re still sick.”
“You’re still coughing and working so hard to take care of me. I can’t make you work even harder. I need to take care of myself now, Mommy.”
She even made a small fist and whispered. “Fighting“”
Her mother was moved to tears but also filled with pride.
“Having a daughter like you is my greatest blessing”
As the pair walked away, likely heading to the infusion area, Alijah stared at the door, lost in thought.
He stopped making a fuss. The bodyguards, relieved, stepped outside to guard the door
Meanwhile, Marcus lay in his hospital bed, his face clouded with anger.
Gemma’s actions earlier kept replaying in his mind, filling him with rage.
“Max, don’t be upset,” Mabel said gently, sitting beside him. “This is partly my fault. When Gemma was being targeted at the hospital, I didn’t help her.”
“But I didn’t mean to.
I was just so mad about her ignoring everything you’d done for her.
I’ve never expect that doctor nearly ruined Gemma’s career.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”
Mabel sighed and recounted the incident with the hacker.
“I think she offended someone overseas, and they hired a hacker to attack her.
If I had stepped in to hire a counter–hacker, she wouldn’t have been criticized or nearly assaulted by a patient’s family.” She sighed.
“I think she might think that I have a good relationship with you, and you asked me to do this.
But I thought you two are husband and wife, and this wouldn’t matter to her. That’s why I didn’t tell you.
Max, I think Gemma’s behavior is because she’s jealous. She’s still in love with you.
She’s fine, honestly speaking. I knew some actress killed a life out of jealousy.
Listen to me. You should explain everything to Gemma and tell her to stop making a fuss. Don’t let thing go to the dend end.”
Marcus’s face twisted in anger. He didn’t know what happened to Gemma before.
Now that he knew the whole picture, anger arose inside hurn,
“Love? That bumpkin dares to think she’s worthy?”
