Chapter 53: Gemma Married Him Because She Loved Him
Everyone said Mr. Cassius was like the devil himself.
Some even claimed he had blood on his hands and could kill without batting an eye.
In short, Mr. Cassius was ruthless, cold–blooded, and devoid of empathy.
But right now-
In Mr. Cassius’s eyes, Gemma saw tenderness.
His dark gaze, like polished obsidian washed clean, revealed every emotion.
“Cassius, you’re not… as cold and ruthless as the rumors say.”
Cassius’s deep voice rumbled, “Then what am I?”
Gemma began counting on her fingers. “Gentle and thoughtful. Don’t deny it–I saw you brushing Candy’s fur.”

“Generous, chivalrous, and brilliant. You beat that hacker, didn’t you? Can’t argue with that.
And.”
“You keep this up, I’ll think you’re buttering me up for a favor,”
Gemma tilted her head, laughing softly.
“Am I that obvious?”
Cassius pondered for a moment, then answered seriously, “Not too bad.”
Gemma burst out laughing again.
“Also, you’ve got a sense of humor. You’re basically a sunny, cheerful big guy at heart.”
Cassius’s lips actually twitched into a faint smile.
His phone buzzed.
He glanced at it–Noah.
“Noah wants to see you. He’s at the kindergarten.”
Gemma had already composed herself. “Sure, let’s go.”
Cassius froze for a moment.
He’d meant she could go see Noah directly at the kindergarten
He hadn’t said he’d go too.
Gemma took several steps ahead, then turned back in surprise.
“Aren’t you coming?”
Cassius thought for a moment. He did have a meeting with the teacher soon–he could move it up to today.
“I’ll come.”
He strode forward.
Marcus was still standing there, stunned.
Brian barely gave him a glance, his expression cold as he turned and walked away.
“Max, are you okay?”
Cedric had been spending a lot of time at the hospital taking care of Mr. Gray. Even though there were caregivers and other family members, Cedric had grown up around Mr. Gray and wanted to show his care.
Exhausted, he had stepped out for a smoke.

“Did someone attack you?”
Cedric’s face darkened with anger. “Do you know who it was?”
Marcus finally came back to his senses, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth.
“Brian.”
Cedric was startled. “The fifth son of the Read family?”
When Gemma insisted on working back then, Marcus had thoroughly investigated all the male doctors at the hospital.
“The Reads and the Grays have an academic collaboration. I’ll go warn them.”
Marcus waved him off. “Forget it.”
Now wasn’t the time to deal with Brian
What was troubling him was how to handle his relationship with Gemma
He’d been so sure Gemma couldn’t leave him.
Yet, he felt utterly unsettled.
Just then, his assistant called.
“Mr. Wilson, the people sent to the small town are back
“And” Marcus fully came back to himself, lighting a cigarette.
He couldn’t shake the thought–Gemma had used him to escape that small town.
The assistant went through his report.
“Mrs. Wilson’s mother died in childbirth. She grew up doing farm work just to survive.
Even so, she suffered constant beatings from her alcoholic father. She almost didn’t make it to high school, but a local principal went out of their way to give her a chance.
Gemma’s past was straightforward.
She was an outstanding student who had met a retired principal who became her patron, propelling her forward.
Someone from that background would seize every opportunity to rise.
But if that were true, why wouldn’t she settle for being a housewife when she could enjoy wealth and luxury?
Yet she insisted on working tirelessly, earning a meager salary.

“She’s an inspiration to many. People say they want to be like her–a doctor who saves lives.”
Marcus staggered slightly.
When All was born-
After maternity leave, Gemma had wanted to return to work
He’d refused, planning for her to quit
For the first time, the usually gentle Gemina argued with him.
She’d said she couldn’t be a stay–at–home wife. She had to achieve something in medicine.
He hadn’t understood her determination.
The fight ended badly.
They’d given each other the cold shoulder for a long time.
A week after returning to work, Gemma had apologized humbly, and he’d reluctantly forgiven her.
The phone was on speaker. Cedric, smoking nearby, overheard everything
He forgot about the cigarette in his hand until the burning stub scorched his fingers, snapping him back to reality.
“Max, do you think Dr. Kelestine’s determination to work all these years was to inspire other girls?”
Those girls had it tough. Many gave up school because of family circumstances.

Gemma wanted to achieve something to show them it was possible to escape their circumstances.

Marcus pressed his lips into a thin line. “So what if we did?”
Cedric could tell they hadn’t reconciled yet.
“Your cooling–off period’s almost over, isn’t it? If you don’t win her back, you’ll regret it
After all. Gemma was incredible. Now that she was friends with Mr. Cassius, her future was bound to be extraordinary!
He decided to push a little harder.
“Max, Ali can’t live without Dr. Kelestine either.”
Marcus turned his face away, dismissive.
“Kids forget things quickly. He’ll be fine in a few days.”
Cedric sighed and went for the final blow.
“You investigated Dr. Kelestine because you thought she married you for status, right?
But if she wanted to be a role model for kids, she didn’t need to marry.
That assistant mentioned someone named Cali–she refused to marry, choosing her career instead.
If Dr. Kelestine wavered on her ideals, it must’ve been because she loved you too much.
Marcus’s fingers trembled.
Ash fell from his cigarette.
“If you really divorce Dr. Kelestine, there’ll be plenty of people lining up to chase her.”
“Who cares?”
Cedric casually added, “I heard the hospital’s planning to feature Dr. Kelestine in a special column. Once it’s done, she’ll go abroad again for an exchange progrant”
“Max, if you finalize the divorce, and she leaves the country, you won’t even have a chance to chase after her.”
Marcus turned and walked out. “I said I’d divorce her. Think I’m joking? She can go wherever she wants.”
Cedric wanted to call him back, but when he looked up, he saw Marcus trembling with every step, needing to steady himself on the wall to stay upright
He sighed.
Marcus was great at everything–except admitting the truth
What Marcus didn’t know was that the moment he left the hospital, he urgently contacted his lawyer.
