Even though Gemma couldn’t make out what Mabel was saying clearly, the piercing sound of her cry was impossible to ignore.

He couldn’t just ignore it.
He thought he’d have to explain himself.
But to his surprise, Gemma didn’t cry or throw a fit.
Instead, she looked so understanding and pitiful that guilt crept over him.
Instinctively, he reached out to pull her into an embrace.
