Chapter 39
Aline raised an eyebrow, the metal ring on it swaying slightly. “Alright, let’s go. I’ll show you the house.”
Albert’s scrutinizing gaze made Aline a bit uncomfortable.
But she didn’t really care; people on the street always looked at her like that.
What astonished Adeline, however, was that the little mute girl, after her initial shock, appeared entirely unperturbed, as if oblivious to the multitude of metal rings adorning her.
Aline walked quite a distance ahead but didn’t hear any footsteps behind her. Curious, she turned around.
She saw Albert, who had been frowning and sizing her up, now gestiing something to Elsie.
Judging by their expressions, it wasn’t a happy conversation.
“Elsie, let’s find another place. She might not be a good person.”
Elsie shook her head, her eyes showing determination.
“No, Albert, don’t judge a book by its cover. I like her house.”
Aline watched them for a while. Seeing that they couldn’t reach a conclusion, she walked back over.
She leaned casually against a wall, pulled out a pack of cigarettes from her pocket, and lit one with a blue flame from her lighter.
She took a slow drag, letting the smoke fill her lungs before exhaling leisurely.
It was as if she was saying, “Don’t mind me; keep arguing.”
But her actions only made Albert angrier. He po
pointed at Aline, his gestures becoming more forceful.
“Look at her. You should know what kind of people she hangs out with. It’s not safe for you to live in her house.”
A sardonic yet assertive smile played on Aline’s lips as she pointed at Albert with her cigarette-clad fingers, her slightly raspy voice reaching the two listeners.
“Hey, handsome, what are you two arguing about? Can I join your encrypted conversation?”
Aline had been judged for her appearance all her life, but she couldn’t stand people pointing fingers at her. She wanted to break his finger.
Albert stopped using sign language and spoke directly, “Elsie, think about it. There are so many good houses out there. Why choose one owned by a punk girl?”
“Imagine you’re living there peacefully, and suddenly she harges in with a bunch of her rowdy friends in the What would you do then?”

“You wouldn’t be able to call for help. You can’t even speak. What are you going to do then?”
Aline expected them t
to say something nasty about her, but this was beyond her expectations.
She got angry, stubbed out her cigarette on the wall, and walked up to them in a few strides.

The last message was filled with nervousness and unease.

Aline opened the door, letting Elsie and Albert in to look around while she sat on the bench by the door, scrolling through short
As she scrolled, she noticed a video where the main character looked strikingly like Elsie.
Without a pixelated blur to protect her identity, these internet influencers really had no ethics!
She read the caption, her eyebrows knitting together.
Could sweet, soft. Elsie really do something like that?
Inside, Elsie first checked out the balcony garden.
There were only a few flowers still blooming, some looking a bit withered.
But in Elsie’s eyes, she could already see herself planting flowers and playing the piano there.
She moved from being almost satisfied to being basically satisfied.
She then looked at the living room, bedroom, and bathroom.
The house was small but cozy.

Elsie thought about it, the more she liked it, but she didnt want to decide too quickly.
After they finished looking, they went back downstairs with Aline, who was now looking at Elsie strangely.
Under Aline’s scrutinizing gaze, Elsie gave her a friendly smile.
Elsie didn’t think much of it, assuming Aline was just curious if she could speak.
the way back, Albert hadn’t given up trying to persuade her.
“Aline doesn’t
seem like a good person. Why do you want to rent from her?”
Elsie looked at him helplessly, signing, “Aline just has a unique style. It doesn’t mean she’s a bad person.”
“Do you think I’m a bad person just because I dont speak?”
Albert was momentarily speechless, though he still didn’t agree with Elsie renting Aline’s house.
Seeing the look in Alberts eyes, Elsie reached out and ruffled his hair. “You c
can’t judge people until you get to know them, right?”
