Chapter 51
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the sheer curtains, ring dappled shadows on the floor.
Elsie woke up and stretched larily, rubbing her sleepy eyes before getting out of bed. She remembered Aline mentioning she was going out last night and still hada i returned, which made her feel a bit uneasy.
She walked to Aline’s room next door and knocked gently. There was no response. Elale knocked a few more times, but there was still na sound from inside. She frowned, worry creeping into her head.
Did Aline not come back last night? Elsie thought to herself, eventually giving up on knocking further. After all, everyone had their own privacy, and she didn’t want to intrude too much.
Elsie tidied up a bit, changed into a comfortable casual outfit, and handed out the door. Today, she would revisit Bruce’s hospital for a follow-up appointment and to practice her pronunciation.
Arriving at the hospital, Elsie navigated her way to Bruce’s office with ease,
Bruce was sitting at his desk, reviewing patient files. When he saw sie come in, his face immediately lit up with a gentle smile.
“Hey, Elsie! You re here, he greeted warmly.
Elsie nodded and sat down on the sofa.
Bruce put down the files and walked over to her, asking with concern “How have you been feeling lately? Any discomfort?”
Elsie shook her head, pointed to her throat, and made a gesture indicating speech. Bruce understood her meaning and smiled.
“Alright, let’s continue practicing your pronunciation. You’ve made great progress recently, and I believe you’ll be able to speak
For the next while, Bruce patiently guided Elsie through her speech exercises.
He started with simple syllables, gradually moving on to words and short phrases.
Elsie practiced diligently, trying her best to produce each sound. Even though her voice was hoarse and unpleasant, she didn’t get discouraged.
Elsie struggled to make sounds, her voice grating like a broken bellows.
Bruce encouragingly
gly patted her shoulder. “Don’t rush; take your time. Your vocal cords haven’t fully recovered yet; it takes time and
patience.”
Elsie took a deep breath and continued practicing. She repeated the exercises over and over again. Finally, after countless attempts, Elsie managed to produce a clear syllable. Bruce’s eyes lit up with surprise, and he excitedly grasped Elsie’s hand.
“Elsie, you did it! You’re getting better and better!”
Tears glistened in Elsie’s eyes as she nodded excitedly and tried to speak again.
“EL…….sic.
Though her voice was still a bit hoarse, it was clear enough to recognize her name.
“That’s wonderful, Elsie, you’re amazing!” Bruce was thrilled, hugging Elsie tightly and whispering in her ear. “I believe you’ll fully

Bruce seemed to understand her hesitation and smiled warmly. “Don worry; it’s just a small gathering with familiar friends. Molly and Albert are really looking forward to you coming.”
He paused and added, “Molly’s been talking about you a lot lately, sh really wants to carve pumpkins with you.”
Just as Elsie was hesitating, the door to the consultation room opered gently. Molly bounced in, followed by a slightly shy Albert.
As soon as Molly saw Elsie, she ran over and hugged her, calling out sweetly, “Elsiel Elsie!”
She looked up, her big, bright eyes full of anticipation. “Elsie, can we spend Halloween together this Saturday? Dr. Valois said I can make a pumpkin lantern and wear a pretty princess dress!”
Albert also approached Elsie, holding out a box of candy. “Elsie, I’d be really happy if you could come,” he said softly. “Il make some delicious treats.”
Faced with such heartfelt invitations, Elsie finally nodded and agreed. Seeing her consent, Molly jumped up in joy and kissed her on
the cheek.
The sun slowly set below the horizon. The sky turned a warm shade of orange, like a blazing fire.
Elsie walked home, the evening breeze brushing her cheeks with a hint of autumn chill. She shivered slightly and instinctively pulled her coat tighter, trying to ward off the cold.
Suddenly, she felt as someone was watching her. A sense of unease washed over her. She turned around abruptly, her heart racing
But all she beheld was a deserted street, with a handful of pedestrians hastily passing by. She failed to notice anything amiss. The shadows of the trees swayed under the dim streetlights, looking like lawing monsters, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
Was she mistaken? Or was it just her hallucination? She always felt ke someone was following her, and she even thought she heard the sound of a camera shutter.
Elsie looked at the still-light sky, thinking there shouldn’t be any danger. But the unease in her heart wouldn’t go away; it only grew
stronger.
She quickened her pace, her eyes scanning her surroundings warily. I felt like something was lurking in the darkness, ready to pounce at any moment.
Most
of the shops along the street were closed, their dim lights casting long shadows, making her feel even more alone and helpless. She just wanted to get home quickly.
When she got home and opened the door, the familiar smell of cat food greeted her.
to Elsie’s feet, affectionately rubbing against her leg
Spud, hearing the door open, immediately jumped off the sofa and walked over to and purring. Elsie bent down, picked up Spud, and gently stroked its soft fur.
