I’ve felt uncomfortable from the moment I started waking up. My skin is itchy, my bones ache, and there’s an irritation can
I shake. My already heightened senses are overwhelming me, and all I’ve done is try to brush my teeth
“Angel?” there’s a tap on the door behind me and I fight everything inside of me to keep from saying something foul to Knight. I take care of the twins today. There’s food on the table. Take a deep breath. It’s okay if you break something it’s just the sway of the full moon,”
“Okay,” I choke out. The door slowly opens I can hear the scrape of the metal on the hinges.
I all but scream when his hand meets my elbow gently He slowly comes closer until my back is pressed against his body. My senses become worse. My muscles all tremble at once. My blood pumping through my body sounds like ocean waves hitting rocks in my ears. The beast inside of me whines from the strange, overwhelming feeling of falling
“I know,” he whispers in my ear. “Lay back down. You don’t have to be up right now,”
I nod, unable to say a single thing I only slept a couple of hours after back to back orgasms last night. It felt good to have his bare skin pressed against my own I crawl under the blankets again and try to get comfortable but wearing a t–shirt and shorts is not going to allow that. I end up curled in his spot letting his scent overwhelm everything else. This feels like a never–ending anxiety attack.
Would things be different if I had grown up training for this? I’m terrified. Things have escalated far from anything I could have ever prepared for. The logical side is at odds with the part of me that has always been fascinated by these creatures. I mean, I’ve shot my stepmother a couple of times and she shook that shit off the way I’ve tried to shake off skinning my knee or bumping my funny bone into a corner.
On the other hand, I just dropped the twins in the middle of a fucking warzone. We were assaulted with the kind of guns! know are illegal because my dad used to sneak them into the country to sell. And for what? Why can’t I say no? My skin prickles and the sound of cars approaching meets my ears, They sound distant.
“Is someone here?” I call out.
“What is it, Phoebe?” Mr. Knightly answers.
my side
“They’re coming. I try to crawl out of the bed only to fall on my side as a wave of heat floods my body. He’s at my trying to get me up immediately.
“Sorry, little female, but it looks like we’re going to have a long day ahead of us, he scoops me up and takes me with him downstairs towards the kitchen. We get to latch that leads under the house. “Watch your head”
I don’t get to ask him what he means by that when he drops me. On instinct, I land in a crouch and then fall on my side when the impact fucks me up. He drops next to me with a duffle bag and opens it up to retrieve a handgun and a silencer. My eyes focus on his hands to try and keep my breathing even.
I can see people running into our yard up ahead. He walks right up to the fencing hiding us and starts to fire at them. They start dropping like something out of a video game. I sit up, reaching into the bag to find another. I follow his movements as I repeat what he had done. I grab two magazines and I’m able to crawl over to the left side.
I’m sweating profusely and already I’m covered in dirt. I can barely see or maybe I can see too much, but all I know is that these people aren’t here to be our friends and there is no way in hell I’m going to sit here and do nothing about it. I stick the silencer through one of the little holes and watch as my father–in–law fires at them until he runs out. I take over when he pulls back to reload.
“Good girl,” he growls with approval
The thing inside of me seems to agree with him because a growl comes out of me and I don’t know how I know this, but that was for him. When my gun clicks, he takes over for me as I reload.
We both pause when a loud howl echoes from outside. Those coming at us pause and someone shouts, making my ears ring so I don’t catch what he says.
“Stay here. No one gets through that gate, Phoebes,” Mr. Knightly orders.
He runs back to the hatch that leads into the house. He goes through it like it’s nothing. I turn around to see that none of the wolves are trying to get through anymore. A huge black wolf lands on the floor a few feet away. The wolves scatter but not before the big bad wolf rips into the two he landed on.

“Are you scared?” I ask
My emotions overwhelm my senses for a moment and everything gets very quiet.
faith in you. Phoebe. You wouldn’t be my vessel if you couldn’t handle this. We are perfect. I can at least promise you that This is not our end, it’s our beginning. The sound of something cracking echoes all around me and my vision goes blank for a moment. Relax Allow me to help you. You’ve done enough for now-
“You promise everything will be okay?”
I promise everything will be fine
I let go of the hold I have on the pain. The sound in my ears fades slowly into nothing. The smell over everything around met
hanges as a low growl vibrates in my chest. I sit back against the fencing feelingthwhole lot better.
All I can see are the hundreds of light beams bleeding through fencing. I blink and it feels like an eternity before I’m able to open my eyes again. A huge shadow is sitting among the beams. I reach up to rub my eyes
A silver wolf is sitting there watching me with her huge icy blue eyes She lowers her head and then lies down. Carefully, the crawls closer until I can reach out for her. I can feel her fur. It’s soft, thick. She smells like sunshine and wildflowers.
“Is this real?” I ask her
“Very” she growls, bumping her cold nose against the palm of my hand.
“You’re so beautiful, I reach up with both hands as she comes closer to me.
“As are you,” she caresses me with her big wolfy head. “Do you accept me as your wolf, Phoebe?”
“You need my permission?”
“To make it the least painful,” she lifts her head to look down at me.
“I accept you, Midnight, I confirm.
Her hot tongue sweeps my face over my eyes. I shut them and clarity comes without the aches or the roaring sound of my blood pumping through my body. I can’t inhale for a moment and don’t want to.
“I accept you,
Phoebe Ryzen. I will be your protector from here on,” she swears. “Rest, let me make it safe for our pups,”
