Chapter 28 Regret Is For The Weak
Samuel had taken quite a beating and had bruises all over his face. He looked utterly disheveled.
Of course, he and Madison had also had quite a wild night. The hickeys below his shirt collar were visible. I knew that Madison was flaunting this, hoping I’d see the marks on
Samuel’s neck and back off.
However, I rolled my eyes and snuggled closer to Evan. He he. Thank goodness he was here today.
Samuel didn’t know that Evan had come here as my boyfriend. He thought Evan was just accompanying Francis to discuss breaking off the engagement, so he said, “Uncle Evan, it’s great
that you’re here.”
Upon hearing that, Evan raised an eyebrow.
Samuel continued, “With you here, the engagement will definitely be canceled.”
He acted like my parents were the ones clinging to the Stafford family and refusing to break off the engagement.
Evan’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t you know how to greet your elders?”
Only then did Samuel reluctantly address my parents. “Mr. Sinclair, Mrs. Sinclair, there’s no point in forcing us to be together. If you have any conditions for canceling the
engagement, I can agree to them as long as they’re reasonable.
Slap! Evan smacked Samuel across the face. Before Samuel could react, he received a hard kick to the back of his knee, which sent him crashing to the ground with a thud.
Ahem. Right at my feet. This unexpected show of respect was quite satisfying.
Evan’s face remained cold. “You have no respect for your
elders. Is this how the Stafford family teaches you to treat
them?
“Mr. Sinclair saved Francis‘ life, yet you treat his daughter like this! Do you think this is the right thing to do?”
Although Evan seemed to be scolding Samuel, his dark gaze was directed at Francis and Wendy.
Francis, seemingly aware that his son had been spoiled,
remained silent. Wendy was always protective of Samuel and started to mutter something, but was quickly silenced by Francis‘ warning look.
Upon seeing this, Samuel, as the nephew, didn’t dare to act out. in front of Evan either. He could only adopt a more respectful tone and greet my parents again.
“There’s still someone you haven’t greeted,” Evan pointed out, referring to me, expecting Samuel to greet me as well.
Samuel then said, “Julia, there are plenty of good men in the world. Can’t you just be with someone else? You’ll definitely find that they’re all better than me!”
“I know,” I replied with a smile, leaving Samuel stunned.
He looked at me, shocked and bewildered, as if he couldn’t
believe that I was no longer pining after him.
“Samuel, in front of both our parents, please tell everyone that the verbal childhood engagement between us is officially canceled. You agree, right?”
“Of course! I absolutely agree. I’ve agreed a long time ago. It’s not like we live in the old days where childhood engagements still mean anything.”
Samuel was visibly excited, and his gaze toward me was kinder than before. I was equally pleased.
“Great. From now on, you go your way, and I’ll go mine. Our future marriages and relationships will have nothing to do with
each other.”
Samuel nodded vigorously. “Julia, you said it yourself. So, don’t blame me for being harsh if you cry and cling to me later.”
“Samuel, I should be the one telling you this. If the day comes when you regret this, I hope you don’t cry and cling to me.”
“Regret is for the weak!” Samuel was practically jumping with joy. “Uncle Evan, thank you. Come on! Let’s go have a drink to
celebrate.”
He was about to pull Evan away when he realized Evan hadn’t moved. Just as Samuel looked at him in confusion, Wendy
said with anger, “Look at how clueless you are. The uncle
you’ve admired and respected since you were young is now Julia’s boyfriend!”
With that, Samuel was completely stunned.
